Hello everyone,

I’m planning to set up some Billy shelves from IKEA in my apartment, but I’m unable to fix them to the walls. Unfortunately, the walls are very delicate and should not be damaged. My question is: How can I safely and securely install Billy shelves without anchoring them to the wall? Are there special anti-tip systems, alternative fastening methods, or practical tips to ensure the shelves don’t tip over or become unstable?

I mainly want to use the shelves for books and a few decorative items, so a stable setup is really important. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice and experiences!

Basically, you can secure the shelf with shelf brackets or angles at the base or on the back wall. Placing thin rubber mats under the feet also provides better grip and prevents slipping. This significantly reduces the risk of tipping over.

Hello lumaximus,

If wall mounting is not possible or desired, there are several ways to make the shelf stable and prevent tipping. One very useful option is to use anti-tip or heavy-duty base plates that can be attached at the bottom to increase the footprint. Alternatively, braces can be fixed to the back of the shelf itself to stabilize it—these can be secured to the shelf frame but not anchored to the wall.

You can also place heavier items on the lower shelves to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. Make sure the shelves are standing on a level surface and use non-slip pads under the feet.

Some users also rely on tension rods between the ceiling and the shelf, which do not require drilling into the wall. This supports the shelf from above and makes it very stable. However, this requires sufficient ceiling strength and some installation work on the ceiling, so you should check this beforehand.

I hope this helps!

Hey lumaximus,

I know that using Billy shelves without wall anchors can be quite tricky, but there are some really effective tricks to keep them secure! 😎

For example, you can stick anti-slip pads under the feet – they work wonders on smooth floors and prevent the shelves from sliding.

Exactly! Another tip: put something heavy on the bottom shelf – books work great as weight. This makes the whole thing more stable without needing to drill holes in the wall.

If you’re up for a DIY solution, try putting thin boards or sturdy foam panels behind the shelves. They press lightly against the wall but hold the shelf securely without causing any damage 😉

Good luck and have fun setting up!

This is a very important point. I also recommend not fully loading the shelves if they are not secured. Instead, the weight should be distributed evenly.

Another tip is to use small leveling wedges or adjustable feet on uneven floors before setting up the shelving unit. These measures together significantly improve safety without the need for wall anchoring.

If allowed in the apartment, you might also consider stabilizing the shelf from the ceiling with a discreet wire or chain to prevent tipping without drilling into the wall.

Hello lumaximus!

I think it’s great that you’re looking for a secure solution without damaging the nice walls! 🙂

I’ve used some “weight tricks” myself with my Billy shelves, and they work really well. Place the heaviest items, like books, on the bottom – that gives a solid anchor. Another great tip is to use double-sided tape or even felt pads between the back of the shelf and the wall – this way the shelves are lightly fixed but won’t damage the wall.

I’ve tried this too, and it provides a springy support without leaving marks!

Don’t stress, Billy shelves are really sturdy, and with these little tricks you’re on the safe side! Good luck!!! 🚀
