Hello everyone,

I am planning to get a Billy bookcase from IKEA and want to use it for as long as possible. My main question is: Which of the different BILLY bookcases are especially durable, particularly regarding stability under heavy load and the longevity of the surface finishes?

I am interested not only in the construction but also in experiences with different materials (particleboard, MDF, veneer, or similar), as well as any differences between older models and the newer versions.

Has anyone had reliable experience with specific BILLY variants and can provide advice on what to look for when buying if durability is the primary concern?

Thanks in advance!

The durability of BILLY shelves largely depends on the material composition. According to product datasheets, models with MDF fronts and back panels offer higher stability and better load capacity than those made with particleboard.

Statistically, most complaints are related to sagging or deformation caused by exceeding the load limits. Standard wall mounting is strongly recommended.

It should also be noted that newer models often have slightly different constructions, sometimes with thinner shelves, which may affect longevity. Comparing the datasheets before purchase is advisable.

Hey everyone! I’m really impressed with my BILLY bookshelf with reinforced shelves and MDF back panel! 🙂

It has held up for over 5 years without any issues! The quality is great, and even with heavy books, I hardly notice any sagging.

For maximum stability, I recommend the white BILLY bookshelves with MDF back panel

I can definitely confirm that! It really helped me make my decision back then. I believe that if you want durable furniture, it’s better to invest a bit more in models like these.

Good luck with your purchase!

An MDF back panel, wall mounting, and avoiding overloading are sufficient to use the BILLY shelf for a long time. Nothing more is needed.

If you plan to store heavy books or equipment, it’s also worth considering accessories like additional metal connectors or special shelving boards.

That sounds interesting! I’ve already thought about reinforcing my shelves myself because the original boards sometimes just aren’t strong enough. This gives me motivation to keep going and find solutions.

Which accessories would you particularly recommend?

Accessories like metal brackets or additional reinforcements can significantly increase load capacity.

There are also special fixed shelves available as replacements that offer higher weight support. This is especially worthwhile when using wide BILLY models with many heavy books.

Also, make sure during assembly that all screws are properly tightened and the shelf is professionally secured to the wall. This minimizes movement and wear.
