Good morning everyone, I want to securely fix Billy shelves in my rented apartment, but I am not allowed to use wall plugs or drill holes in the wall. Are there practical and safe alternatives to the classic fixing with wall plugs that can still keep the shelf stable and prevent it from tipping or falling over without screws? My main concern is safety and stability, as I don’t want to cause any damage to the wall, and the shelf should not simply fall over when it is fully loaded. I look forward to any tips, including experiences or recommendations for materials that are well suited for this challenge.

You can also achieve good stability by placing weights on the bottom shelf or using a heavy base if an effective wall connection is not possible.

That’s a good point. I was also considering stacking heavy binders at the bottom to make the shelf as stable as possible.

In general, the more measures are combined, the safer the result. Whether tension rods, hook-and-loop straps, or weights on the shelf – combining them increases the sense of security and stability.

Finally, I would like to point out one important aspect: when selling or handing over to a landlord at a later stage, it is advisable to take a quick photo of the fastenings for documentation purposes. This helps to avoid misunderstandings.
