Hello everyone, I recently bought several IKEA Platsa furniture units and plan to set them up in a room with carpet flooring. I’m wondering what the best and safest way to secure or fix the furniture is, so they stand stable and don’t slide or tip over. Are there any specific techniques or accessories recommended for carpeted floors?

I understand that standard wall anchoring generally works, but the challenge with soft surfaces like carpet is that the furniture can easily move or not stand firmly. Does anyone have experience with solutions such as anchors, special furniture feet, anti-slip mats, or similar? Tips on how to stabilize the furniture permanently without damaging the carpet would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hello minanon,

your question is very relevant because carpet flooring actually provides a completely different base compared to hard floors like laminate or tiles. Here are the key points I would recommend:

- First: Always use wall fastenings! IKEA PLATSA furniture can be secured with wall hooks, and this is the main source of stability, especially if the floor gives way.

- Second: For contact with the carpet, you can use so-called anti-slip furniture pads. These come in various materials, such as rubber or gel, which help improve grip through the fibers and prevent slipping.

- Third: Especially on thicker carpets, it is advisable to place a thin, firm base under the furniture legs. This can be an HDF board or fine plywood, cut to size. This changes the load distribution and prevents the furniture from sinking unevenly into the carpet.

- Fourth: I do not recommend driving screws or nails directly into the carpet itself, as this damages the carpet and provides minimal holding power.

- One more question: How thick is your carpet? Is it very thick or rather thin? This also influences the solution.

If you like, I can share some product recommendations I have personally used. Best regards!

To secure PLATSA furniture on carpet: install wall brackets and attach non-slip pads under the feet. If necessary, place a solid board underneath to prevent sinking.

I share the same concern. Sometimes it seems many people look for purely mechanical solutions without considering that carpet is not designed to withstand such stress. Securing a piece of furniture to carpet is contradictory, as the fibers are flexible – only compromises or avoiding very heavy furniture can help if you want to preserve the carpet.

Do you really believe that using a few anti-slip pads or placing boards underneath will prevent slipping permanently? In my experience, it’s a matter of maintenance and, overall, the choice of furniture. If the furniture is too heavy, carpet will never be the ideal solution.

Thank you for raising this important point. I understand that there is no perfect solution, but I have to start somewhere. In my case, it’s not just about slight slipping, but also ensuring that the furniture doesn’t tip over or gradually shift over time — especially in a home with children.

My carpet is about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) thick and relatively tightly woven, so it’s not very fluffy but also not thin. Has anyone had experience with special adhesive tapes or hook-and-loop systems for securing furniture on carpets? I am also interested in reliable long-term solutions for this issue.

Of course, wall anchoring remains the most important measure, that is clear.

Hello minanon,

Based on my experience, the combination of wall mounting and non-slip furniture pads is the safest option for your situation. Here is a more detailed explanation:

- Wall mounting: This prevents furniture from tipping over, especially in households with children. Never skip this step.

- Non-slip pads made of rubber or silicone: These stop the furniture from sliding on carpet fibers, for example, products like "furniture gliders with anti-slip."

- Additionally: A thin, screw-fixed wooden board (e.g., 6 mm (1/4 inch) plywood) can be placed under the furniture to better distribute the weight and prevent sinking into the carpet. This wooden board can be secured to the furniture legs but can be removed without leaving any residue.

- Adhesive surfaces or double-sided tape on carpet are usually problematic since they leave residue and often lose their grip.

My recommendation is to primarily rely on mechanical fixing (wall) and complement it with suitable furniture pads – this is the best compromise between stability and carpet protection.

If you like, I can also provide some model examples.
