Hello everyone, I am planning to move soon and own several Billy bookcases from IKEA that I want to transport safely. My question is: How do you secure BILLY bookcases most effectively during a move to prevent damage or them falling apart while being transported? I am especially interested in practical tips for disassembling them or safely transporting them fully assembled. If you have experience with specific packing materials or techniques, I would greatly appreciate your detailed advice. Thank you very much in advance!

Hello Renren,

I have often moved BILLY shelves myself. Basically, I recommend completely disassembling the shelves. This is not only safer but also saves space. If possible, you should remove the sides, shelves, and back panels.

For transport, I wrap the boards in bubble wrap and secure them with tape. The back panels are often made of very thin particleboard, so you should be especially careful with them – it’s best to protect them with cardboard.

Additional tip: Put screws and wall plugs in small bags and label them, so you can keep track of everything easily during reassembly.

If you want to transport the shelves fully assembled, I would secure them tightly with ratchet straps and try to prevent them from shifting inside the van. Always pay attention to stability, as BILLY shelves are relatively unstable without anchoring.

That is naturally the safest method, but it also takes an incredible amount of time. If you’re in a hurry, you can leave the units intact, just stand them upright, cushion them with blankets, and secure them well.

Let’s be honest: most BILLY shelves aren’t designed for moving, but with enough care, it’s possible. Considering this, sometimes tearing them down and buying new ones is cheaper than spending hours dismantling and sorting screws.

Completely dismantle the shelves. Protect the boards well with padding. Collect screws in small bags. Take special care to protect the back panels. Then transport everything separately. This way, you avoid damage.

A structured approach is advisable:
1. Completely disassemble the BILLY shelves, including the back panel.
2. Sort individual parts by dimensions.
3. Use different padding materials: bubble wrap for boards, corrugated cardboard for back panels.
4. Clearly label screws, dowels, and accessories, and store them in resealable bags.
5. For transport, upright storage of the boards is recommended to prevent deformation.

These measures minimize transport damage and greatly simplify reassembly.

That may be true in some cases, but if you value sustainability and cost-efficiency, it’s not the best option.

I recommend really taking the shelves apart.

Also, be sure to keep track of the screws – IKEA often provides replacements if something gets lost, but that creates unnecessary extra work.

Small boxes or magnetic screw containers are practical to prevent losing anything.

For the back panels: if you don’t have the original backing, furniture blankets can often be used as protective covers.
