Hello everyone, I am planning to move soon and own several Billy bookcases from IKEA that I want to transport safely. My question is: How do you secure BILLY bookcases most effectively during a move to prevent damage or them falling apart while being transported? I am especially interested in practical tips for disassembling them or safely transporting them fully assembled. If you have experience with specific packing materials or techniques, I would greatly appreciate your detailed advice. Thank you very much in advance!

During my last move, I simply secured my BILLY Grammy Edition 😁 with blankets and ratchet straps. Clearly not ideal, but with careful packing using bubble wrap, it worked well. This way, I didn’t have to disassemble it, and the shelf arrived undamaged.

Not entirely recommended, but an option if you don’t have much time and still want to be cautious 🙂

Hello Renren,

First of all, it is important to note that the stability of BILLY shelves largely depends on the condition of the screws and the material.

I recommend that if you want to disassemble the shelf yourself, carefully remember the order and, if possible, take photos of the assembly beforehand.

For padding, use a combination of bubble wrap and blankets to protect the delicate shelves and back panels.

When transporting, make sure to store the shelf in an upright position and secure it with ratchet straps to prevent tipping or sliding.

If the shelf is to remain assembled, tighten some additional screws (without damaging the material) to reinforce the side panels.

Good luck!

Dismantle shelves, wrap boards in ceiling protection, sort and label screws. Secure shelves in the van with straps and cushion them to prevent shifting.
