BetufraHello everyone, I am currently planning the installation and safe removal of Ikea Metod wall cabinets in my kitchen. My specific question is: How can I install the Ikea Metod wall cabinets so that they are securely fastened to the wall and there is no risk of them coming loose or falling during everyday use? Additionally, I am interested in how to properly dismantle the cabinets without causing damage, especially regarding the wall fixings and cabinet construction. It would be great if you could also share any tips or pitfalls to watch out for specifically when assembling and disassembling these cabinets.
I can easily understand that safety is an important issue when it comes to wall cabinets, especially if you’re not used to assembling furniture regularly. I was initially cautious about the mounting myself, since the cabinets need to support quite a bit of weight. It’s really important that the wall behind the cabinets is stable and that the appropriate anchors and screws are used for the specific wall type. For drywall, for example, be sure to use #8 cavity anchors. And if you notice the holes becoming loose when removing the cabinets, it’s better to replace the anchors with new ones. I also once read that it’s best to hang the cabinets with two people to prevent shifting—I did it that way too and felt more secure.
There are several technical details to consider for the safe installation of the Ikea Metod wall cabinets. First, make sure the mounting rail or hanging system is securely and levelly attached to the wall. Always use a spirit level and drill holes in structurally sound locations (preferably into wall studs or load-bearing walls). The mounting screws included in the Ikea set are generally sufficient, but the anchors vary greatly depending on the wall material. For concrete walls, immediately recommend 10 mm (0.4 inch) anchors, and for drywall or plasterboard walls, use special metal cavity anchors. Hanging the cabinet works best with two people: first hook the cabinet onto the lower part of the mounting rail, then push it gently upward so it locks in securely and sits safely. When removing the cabinet, use a flat-head screwdriver to release the locking mechanism on the hanging bracket before carefully pulling the cabinet down – this helps avoid damage to the mounting. Do you have any special wall types or uncertainties regarding the existing structure?

For disassembly, you should use a flathead screwdriver to unlock the latch on the mounting bracket before carefully pulling the cabinet downwardThis is a great tip and exactly explains why I damaged several parts last time when I just tried to pull the cabinet down. If you don’t release the lock, it can cause damage – which is especially frustrating with wall-mounted furniture.
To ensure a safe and efficient installation of the Ikea Metod wall cabinets, I recommend the following structured approach:
- First, carefully assess the wall type (concrete, brick, drywall, etc.) and select appropriate wall plugs.
- The mounting rail for the Metod series should be fixed with at least two screws per wall anchor, ideally into load-bearing points.
- The rail must be positioned perfectly level using a spirit level to avoid alignment issues later on.
- Then, hang the cabinet on the bottom mounting bracket and secure it at the top.
When removing the cabinet, it is important to:
- Unlock the top anchoring tab using a thin screwdriver.
- Carefully pull the cabinet forward at the top first, then lift it down to minimize strain.
Avoid overloading the cabinets, as excess weight can compromise the fixing. This also explains why it is essential to follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions precisely. For maximum safety, a second mounting can provide additional stability if the wall permits.

How do I install the Ikea Metod wall cabinets so that they are truly securely attached to the wall and there is no risk of them coming loose or falling down in everyday use?I wonder if all the effort with these hanging systems is overrated. Metod is designed for the mass market after all. Anyone who has seen truly sturdy furniture or cabinets knows that real safety comes only from a solid substructure anchored into the wall and, if necessary, reinforced with additional brackets. Don’t worry, I’m not trying to cause alarm here.
But: if you really want to be on the safe side, you should not simply screw into the wall stud, but also integrate extra cross braces, metal angles, or similar reinforcements. Just following Ikea’s official method can quickly reach its limits with heavily loaded wall cabinets. So: hang the cabinet with two people, read the official instructions, and then carefully consider whether you want to do even more. Safety is an attitude, not a standard.
