ronmertHello everyone, I am currently planning to apply films or decorative coverings to my IKEA Besta furniture, but I definitely want to avoid air bubbles under the film. Since I know this is not always easy, I would like some tips or proven methods on how to apply the films smoothly and securely to the smooth surfaces of the Besta units. I am especially interested in how to properly prepare the film, which tools or aids are useful, and whether there are specific adhesive techniques that help prevent air bubbles. Maybe someone here has experience with Besta furniture and can share what to watch out for? Regards!
I wonder whether these common methods using water spray mist are always advisable. Especially with wood-effect foil on MDF-based BESTA panels, moisture and adhesive could react and potentially damage the surface or reduce the adhesive strength. Are there any experiences that contradict this? Alternatively, it might be worth considering special self-adhesive films that can be applied bubble-free without the need for water. Is anyone familiar with something like this?
Hello ronmert, I am very familiar with this issue as I have applied vinyl to several BESTA units myself. Generally, I recommend using films with a strong adhesive base, such as polymer adhesive films. It is important to thoroughly clean and degrease the surface before applying the film, ideally with isopropanol or denatured alcohol. If you prefer wet application, you can lightly spray the film with a solution of water and a drop of dish soap; this helps to make the film more adjustable. Then use a soft squeegee or a plastic card to smooth the film piece by piece from the center towards the edges, pushing out any air bubbles. Small bubbles can be punctured with a needle and carefully pressed out. Patience is key here; rushing leads to mistakes.

Therefore, removing the film is generally easier without wet adhesion methods to avoid glue residues. Preparation involves a thorough cleaning with a lint-free cloth without any oily residue. For the actual application of the film, I recommend using films with integrated air channel technology, as they make bubble-free installation easier without special liquids. Tools: A squeegee with a felt edge and a sharp utility knife for cutting are essential. Work step-by-step with consistent pressure, and do not skip any corners.
