Hello everyone,

For some time now, I have noticed a few scratches and fine scuffs on the glass fronts of my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets, which are increasingly bothering me. The fronts have a frame profile with single-pane tempered glass (ESG), and these are not deep cracks but rather superficial scratches caused by light impacts or cleaning attempts.

My question is: What is the best way to repair scratched Ikea Metod glass fronts without replacing the glass panels? Are there effective products or methods that amateurs can use to reduce or make the scratches invisible? Which tools or products are most suitable for this?

I have already considered polishing compounds, glass polish, or various home remedies, but I am unsure whether these actually reduce the scratches or might even damage the glass surface further.

I would appreciate any expert advice or personal experiences on how you have dealt with similar issues!

Hello cagatay44,

In cases like this, certain glass polishes or abrasive pastes can actually help achieve some initial improvements. It’s important to note that Ikea Metod glass fronts are made of tempered safety glass (ESG), which is quite durable but can still get scratches on the surface.

For repairing, I would recommend the following approach:
- First, thoroughly clean the glass front with alcohol to remove any dirt particles.
- Then, you can use a fine glass polish, like those available from opticians or in automotive care. These usually contain fine abrasives (polishing agents).
- It is important not to rub too harshly or apply too much pressure to avoid further damage to the surface.
- A microfiber cloth or a soft polishing pad works well for applying the polish.

Also, make sure to apply the polish in small circular motions. The effect usually doesn’t last forever but can make small scratches less noticeable. Important: deep scratches cannot be removed this way, since glass cannot be sanded down like wood without completely damaging the surface.

Good luck, and if you have questions about specific products, feel free to ask!

When repairing scratches on glass-based surfaces, such as Ikea Metod ESG glass fronts, the following key points should be considered:

- ESG refers to tempered safety glass, which is highly resistant to breakage, but the surface can be easily scratched by friction or impact.
- Superficial scratches with a depth of a few micrometers can be reduced by polishing with glass polish or other very fine abrasives.
- Materials like cerium oxide or special glass polishing compounds are proven effective.
- It is important to use a fine polishing pad and the proper technique to avoid applying excessive heat or pressure to the glass surface.
- Household remedies like toothpaste may have minimal effect but are not optimal and can leave residue.
- Deeper scratches can only be fixed by replacement, as repairs would otherwise worsen the appearance of the glass.

Conclusion: For minor scratches, professional glass polishes are the best option. Always follow the instructions carefully and work gently. Replacement remains the only solution for severe damage.

Are you sure that you can actually talk about "scratching the surface" with toughened glass? As far as I know, this is more difficult because the tempering stress on the surface usually prevents such mechanical micro-damage.

That makes sense to me, but I believe that what often looks like scratches are just superficial dull spots caused by friction or deposits. It might be worth cleaning and degreasing the surface with isopropanol before attempting any polishing. You should definitely avoid treating the surface with overly abrasive materials, as this could destroy the tempering and thus compromise the safety of the glass.

What are your thoughts?

Exactly, that is essential. If you damage a toughened safety glass (ESG) facade, it can cause long-term problems even if no immediate cracks appear.

That’s very good advice, as dirt and grease residues can indeed create the impression of scratches or make polishing more difficult.

In general, I would say: For minor cosmetic flaws, polishing is possible, but you should use a very fine polish and clean the glass facade thoroughly between steps to assess the results. Otherwise, you risk further damaging the surface.

Additionally:

There are also special glass repair kits available for minor scratches, which usually contain cerium oxide and use a polishing paste. However, these are more for improving the appearance rather than providing a complete repair. Depending on the depth of the scratch, these kits can restore shine and significantly reduce minor scratches.

Important points:
- Apply the polish carefully and locally
- Work in well-ventilated areas
- Clean and dry thoroughly afterwards

For those very concerned about the appearance, replacing an individual panel can also be considered, as the costs often remain reasonable, especially if only one or a few need to be replaced.
