Hello everyone,

I have noticed several small dents on my Malm furniture caused by everyday use. My goal is to properly repair these dents without significantly damaging the surface or altering the original appearance.

My question is: what are the recommended methods to remove dents from Malm furniture? I am especially interested in whether these dents can be treated using simple household items or if special tools and materials are required.

I would appreciate detailed tips and a step-by-step guide that is easy to follow, even for a beginner. Thank you in advance!

Malm furniture is usually made from wood-based panels with a melamine coating. This makes repairing a dent a bit more delicate compared to solid wood.

The steam ironing method works on solid wood because the water soaks into the wood, causing the fibers to expand and the dent to reduce. With melamine, the surface is non-porous, so moisture hardly penetrates.

My suggestion:

- First, try the steam ironing method on an inconspicuous area to see if the surface can handle it.
- For small pressure marks, furniture repair wax or wood filler specifically designed for laminated surfaces can also be used.
- For bigger damages, the only option is to repair with a color-matched filler, followed by gentle sanding and treatment with special liquid coatings or varnish.

Keep in mind: The appearance may be slightly affected if you are not very careful.

My experience with repairing veneered furniture:

1. Depending on the depth of the dent, you can try filling it with furniture repair wax that is heated and applied.

2. For slightly pressed-in areas, polishing with a polishing paste can help to slightly roughen the surface and improve the appearance.

3. It is always important to let the surface dry thoroughly after each step and to check the effectiveness between the steps.

4. In recent years, there have also been special repair kits for melamine surfaces, which fit very well due to their hardness.

If you try ironing, please maintain a safe distance to avoid bubble formation caused by heat.

That's a great tip! I do that sometimes too. A bit of polish, gentle buffing, and the scratches already look much less noticeable. Sometimes a little beauty boost is all a piece of furniture needs. ;-)

But of course, for deeper dents, you have to dig a bit deeper.

Summary and Recommendation:

Malm furniture is generally not designed for simple wood repairs, as it is made from particleboard with a melamine veneer.

Dents caused by minor impacts can usually be softened by applying slight moisture and heat with a damp cloth and iron, which causes the wood-based material to swell slightly.

However, caution is advised with melamine surfaces, as they have low heat resistance.

For deeper dents, repair kits with wood filler or special fillers for laminated surfaces are recommended, followed by sanding and refinishing.

It is always practical to test on an inconspicuous area first to avoid damage to the surface.

As a last resort, professional complete restoration or replacement of the furniture piece may be considered.
