Hello everyone, I have an older Malm bed frame from IKEA that has developed some cracks. These are mainly located on the wooden parts that support the slatted frame and appear to have been caused by continuous stress.

My specific question is: How can I repair these cracks so that the bed becomes stable again and no further damage occurs? Are there special wood glues or other methods that are particularly suitable for the type of particleboard or MDF that the Malm is mostly made of?

Additionally, I’m interested to know if the repair can be done without disassembling the bed, or if it needs to be taken apart for that.

I look forward to practical tips and recommended approaches.

You should definitely clean the cracks thoroughly before gluing to remove any dust. Use PU wood glue or a good PVA glue that is also suitable for chipboard.

Then securely fix or clamp the parts until the glue is dry. If possible, disassemble the frame to have better access to the broken areas.

This is an important point I would like to add: For Malm bed frames made of coated particle board, lightly sanding the edges of the cracks with fine sandpaper is advisable. This significantly improves the adhesive’s bond.

PU glue is a good choice because it cures waterproof and flexible, ideal for heavily loaded areas like bed frames. PVA glue is also possible but should be water-resistant (D3 rating).

Regarding the procedure: The bed frame does not need to be fully disassembled, but taking it apart makes access easier and ensures precise bonding. If that’s not possible, at least remove any load and fix the parts securely during gluing.

Finally, a thin coat of clear varnish is recommended to protect the repair area from moisture.

Additionally, it is important to ensure that the crack is opened deeply enough before applying the glue to guarantee an effective bond. Surface dirt or loose particles weaken the adhesive effect.

For MDF and chipboard, traditional repair methods used for solid wood are not suitable. Adhesives that allow good mutual penetration are important here, which is why PU glue is preferred. For more severe damage, stabilizing the board with small wood dowels or metal brackets is possible, if technically feasible and visually acceptable.

Using epoxy resin as a filler for larger cracks is also an option; it provides high strength but is somewhat more complex to apply.
