Hello dear community,

I have noticeable broken handle recesses on my Ikea Besta furniture. These handle recesses are designed to be multifunctional, but it seems that the corners and edges show signs of material fatigue due to regular use and stress, which eventually leads to breakage. My question is: What proven methods or repair techniques do you recommend to restore these broken handle recesses?

I am particularly interested in mechanical solutions, such as filling or reinforcing with suitable materials, as well as any replacement parts or workarounds that do not require completely replacing the front panel. Tips on the right tools and necessary preparation steps would also be very helpful.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hello keobi,

Your question is very interesting and relates to a common issue with Ikea BESTA furniture, especially when heavily used and the handle recesses are made from thin particleboard. Repairing these broken handle recesses should be done carefully to ensure stability is restored and the appearance remains acceptable.

My suggestion:

- First, clean thoroughly: Remove dust and old glue residues using fine sandpaper (grit 120 to 180).

- For smaller damaged areas, using wood filler or putty applied in several layers is recommended. It is important to allow each layer to dry completely and sand lightly between layers.

- For larger breaks, consider cutting a suitable piece of wood shaped to reconstruct the handle recess. Make sure the wood thickness matches to achieve a flush result.

- Then the wooden piece can be fitted and secured with high-quality wood glue (water-resistant). Clamps or tape can be used to hold the area firmly together while the glue cures.

- If you want to blend the surface, fine sandpaper and possibly matching wood stain or acrylic paint can help minimize visible differences.

- Tools needed: fine sandpaper, wood glue (water-resistant, e.g. PVA wood glue), wood filler, small fine-toothed saw for cutting wood pieces, clamps.

Two questions for better assessment:
- How large are the chipped areas?
- Are the furniture surfaces lacquered or only veneered?

This will help me recommend whether ready-made filler is enough or a wood-based reconstruction is more suitable.

Best regards and good luck!

I’d like to add a structured guide on how I repaired recessed handles on BESTA units:

1. Preparation
- Clean the recessed handle thoroughly and carefully remove any loose wood splinters.
- Smooth the broken area using fine sandpaper (240 grit).

2. Sealing (for porous areas)
- Lightly coat the broken edge with wood glue using a thin brush to prevent excessive moisture absorption.

3. Filling
- For small to medium damage, I use an acrylic-based wood filler that is easy to sand and can be painted over.
- Apply the filler in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry completely.

4. Sanding
- After the final drying, sand the area finely with 320–400 grit sandpaper until the surface is smooth and well-prepared for painting or finishing.

5. Painting / Sealing
- Paint the repaired spot to match the surrounding surface; for genuine BESTA fronts, a matte acrylic paint in the matching color works best.
- Apply several thin coats, lightly sanding between each layer.

Tip: If the recessed handle is extensively broken, it may be worthwhile to replace the furniture front panel. Individual parts from Ikea are affordable and can save you from a complicated repair with uncertain results.

Common mistakes:
- Applying filler too thickly can cause cracks during drying.
- Insufficient surface preparation prevents proper adhesion of the filler.

I hope this helps!

If the recessed handle is broken over a large area, it might be worth replacing the entire furniture front.

I agree, when I read that, it immediately comes to mind: Broken recessed handles are really annoying, but sometimes replacing them isn’t such a bad option. Fortunately, the BESTA series is modular and affordable.

For those who enjoy DIY projects, here’s a little tip: you can fill the damaged area with epoxy resin and then sand it until smooth. This creates a fairly durable surface, looks almost like the original, and really enhances the appearance.

Of course, it requires some patience because the resin needs time to cure, but while waiting, you can enjoy a coffee or work on another part 😉

Good luck with the repair!
