Hello everyone,

I have noticed a rather unattractive damage on my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet door. The surface around the handle area is chipped, and the door has a small dent, probably caused by an accidental impact. My question is how to best repair these damages without having to buy a completely new door.

Are there ways to reseal or even out the surface to prevent further moisture penetration and keep the door looking acceptable? What materials and tools should I use if I want to repair the surface?

Additionally, I’m interested if anyone has experience with purchasing replacement parts like handles or even individual door fronts, in case a repair is not worthwhile.

I would be very grateful for specific tips, perhaps step-by-step instructions or advice on what to avoid. Thanks in advance!

To repair a damaged Ikea Metod door, especially with chipped surfaces and dents, I recommend the following steps:

- Lightly sand the damaged area to remove any loose material and ensure better adhesion.
- Use a suitable wood filler product for uneven spots and dents that can be sanded once dry.
- After the filler has dried, sand the area smoothly and evenly.
- Then apply a primer designed for furniture surfaces to protect the area from moisture.
- Finally, apply several thin coats of matching furniture paint or a touch-up lacquer pen in the appropriate color.

The necessary tools include sandpaper of various grits, a putty knife, brushes, and matching paint or lacquer. Be sure to observe the drying times between each layer.

Regarding replacement parts: Ikea sells individual door fronts in their store, although availability depends on the model and stock. Handles can usually be easily replaced, and it is often worthwhile to exchange them if the damage around the handle area is significant.

A full repair can be more cost-effective if the door does not have extensive damage. If the damage is too severe, replacement is often the better solution.

Great tips! Repainting is really important to prevent further damage. I once had a damaged METOD door, and what really helped me was applying wood filler very thinly and then sanding it with fine-grit sandpaper.

So don’t worry—even if the door is a bit worn, it can be repaired well with patience. 🙂

One more tip: when applying the final coat of paint, always work in well-ventilated rooms, or even better, outside to get rid of the smell. Good luck!

For small damages, I recommend using a combination of fine sandpaper (grit 220 to 320), a white wood filler for a matching appearance, and a water-based acrylic paint.

It is important to sand the surface completely smooth after filling and, above all, to remove all dust before painting. This prevents unpleasant craters and ensures an even finish.

If the door is slightly warped or has larger damage, replacing the door panel can also be considered. This is often straightforward: Ikea provides doors including the pre-drilled holes for the hinges.

If you dismantle the door, be sure to mark the positions of the hinges and handles so that everything fits exactly when reassembled.
