Hello everyone, I have an issue with water stains on my Malm furniture surfaces from IKEA. These are coated MDF, not to be confused with solid wood or veneer. Unfortunately, some unattractive water marks have appeared, probably caused by damp glasses or spilled liquids that weren’t wiped away quickly enough. My question is: How can I remove these water stains without damaging the surface or leaving visible marks? Are there any home remedies or special cleaning products you would recommend? And what should definitely be avoided to prevent harming the surface? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

If vinegar smells too strong or damages the surface, use a damp cloth with lukewarm water and possibly some dish soap instead. Dry thoroughly afterward. Water stains usually occur when water penetrates the coating, so removing moisture is essential.

I really like how many practical tips are gathered here! 🙂 I once had sweat marks on my Malm dresser, and the stains were quite annoying. What helped me was gently using a hairdryer on a low setting to blow the moisture away. Always keep some distance, not too close, to avoid damaging the surface. Afterwards, wipe down with a microfiber cloth, which noticeably reduced the stains. Hopefully, this helps you too!

Vinegar often helps against limescale deposits.

If vinegar is too concentrated, it can cause dullness or discoloration. So always dilute it well and wipe thoroughly afterward!

Great tip! 🙂

Sometimes you just need patience and a gentle method, and then dealing with Malm and its water stains works really well.

And don’t forget: always wipe dry thoroughly after cleaning to avoid inviting the next water stain!
