Hello everyone, I have an issue with water stains on my Malm furniture surfaces from IKEA. These are coated MDF, not to be confused with solid wood or veneer. Unfortunately, some unattractive water marks have appeared, probably caused by damp glasses or spilled liquids that weren’t wiped away quickly enough. My question is: How can I remove these water stains without damaging the surface or leaving visible marks? Are there any home remedies or special cleaning products you would recommend? And what should definitely be avoided to prevent harming the surface? I look forward to your tips and experiences!
Water stains on MDF-coated Malm surfaces often occur when moisture remains for an extended period. For cleaning, I recommend the following approach: first, gently wipe with a damp microfiber cloth to remove surface dirt. For stubborn stains, use a solution of mild dish soap and water. Important: Do not use harsh cleaners, abrasive sponges, or alcohol-based products, as these can damage the coating. If this does not help, you can carefully treat white water stains with a neutral furniture polish wax. In general, dry the surface after cleaning to prevent new stains.
Hey, that sounds frustrating at first, but don’t worry 🙂 Water stains on Malm furniture are not the end of the world! I’ve had success using a mixture of white toothpaste and water: gently rub it in with a soft cloth, especially on matte surfaces. Then wipe it dry thoroughly. Often the stains disappear really well, and the finish stays intact! It’s satisfying when it works 🙂
One more tip: never rub with abrasive materials, or you’ll risk scratches quickly! Good luck!

Oh yes, I’m familiar with those water stains too! With Malm furniture, I’ve always tried the following: a very light and gentle application using just a hint of olive oil on the cloth. They say this can slightly “revive” the surface without affecting the color. But be careful: it’s best to use only a tiny amount and then polish well afterward, otherwise it can become greasy and attract more dust. 🙂 Definitely test on an inconspicuous area first!
To remove water stains from Malm surfaces, I recommend using a cloth lightly dampened with a mixture of vinegar and water (1 part vinegar, 2 parts water). Gently wipe the area and then dry it thoroughly. Vinegar often helps with lime scale residues. Afterwards, polish the surface with a dry cloth.
