Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Ikea Besta shelving unit: there are old stickers and adhesive residue on the doors and surface that I would like to remove without damaging or rubbing off the finish. I know this material is delicate and want to avoid scratches or discoloration.

Does anyone have experience or tips on how to best remove old stickers or adhesive from a Besta furniture piece? What products or techniques are suitable for loosening the adhesive residue without harming the surface?

I look forward to helpful advice, ideally with explanations on why a particular method works well. Thanks in advance!

Hey tamerte40!

I know this all too well – those stubborn stickers! 💪 My advice: start by moistening the surface with warm water and a little dish soap; this often helps to soften the adhesive. Then I use a hairdryer to gently warm the adhesive residue—this usually makes it much easier to peel off! Just be careful not to use too high a temperature, as the surface could be damaged.

A plastic scraper or an old credit card works great for carefully lifting the film without scratching. At the end, you can rub some oil (for example, baby oil or sunflower oil) into any remaining adhesive and gently wipe it off.

Don’t give up, patience usually does the trick! You’ll manage! 🙂

This method is indeed effective and is also recommended by Ikea for removing adhesive residue on lacquered or melamine surfaces. Important points:

- Keep the hairdryer temperature moderate to avoid warping the material.
- After warming, quickly lift the film residues using a plastic scraper.
- For stubborn adhesive residue, isopropyl alcohol (at least 70%) is suitable for gentle cleaning without damaging the surface.

Chemical solvents like acetone and nail polish remover should be avoided, as they can damage the paint finish.

Conclusion: Heat combined with mechanical removal plus the use of alcohol-free care oils is the gentlest approach.

Allow the heat to take effect, then use a plastic spatula. Oil can help to dissolve adhesive residues. Do not use sharp tools.

I know how annoying these stickers can be, especially when you’re already worried about damaging a beautiful piece of furniture.

I recently had a similar issue and was initially unsure about how careful I needed to be. But after trying the tip with a hairdryer, removing the sticker became much easier. For me, it was important to proceed calmly and gently, avoiding any forceful pulling.

If anyone needs more advice or feels uncertain, I’m happy to help. Sometimes it’s beneficial to work in stages and care for the surface in between.

Honestly, the Besta fronts aren’t that delicate. Many people make a big deal out of it. A bit of caution is fine, but the material is more durable than you might think.

I believe it’s perfectly fine to carefully lift the larger scraps with a sharp knife and then clean up with solvents. “No scratches” often means “no removal” as well.

If you’re afraid of causing damage, you’ll never get rid of the stickers in the end.
