ᐅ How should I proceed if the doors of an Ikea HEMNES wardrobe are not aligned properly?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought an Ikea Hemnes wardrobe, and while assembling it, I noticed that the doors are not properly aligned. Specifically, the doors do not close flush, are slightly misaligned in some areas, and sometimes stick when opening or closing. Since the material is wood, I want to avoid damaging it or applying too much force.

My question to the community: What is the best way to properly align the doors of the Ikea Hemnes wardrobe? Are there specific screws, adjustments, or tricks I should be aware of to ensure the doors fit perfectly, and if so, how exactly do I make these adjustments? What tools would be ideal for this?

I look forward to your tips and experiences, thanks in advance!

To systematically fix these issues, I recommend the following steps:

- First, check if the cabinet is placed on a level surface, as this affects door alignment.
- Then adjust the height screws on the hinges to make the doors even.
- Use the side screws to align the doors horizontally.
- Finally, adjust the depth screws so the door sits flush with the cabinet frame.

Tools: Phillips screwdriver PH2, possibly a spirit level for initial checks. It is important to turn the screws slowly and carefully to avoid over-tightening.

Additionally, check that the hinges are properly installed and that no screws are loose.

This is a frequently overlooked issue. Unevenness in the floor can permanently affect the door alignment.

I also recommend fully loosening the hinges before fine-tuning, aligning the door, and then gradually tightening the screws.

I would just add:

- Make sure the hinges are properly snapped into place.
- If a door is constantly sticking, check the hinges and consider replacing them.

That usually works for me.

the hinges from Ikea are simply not the highest quality, and the adjustment screws often have play

I have to disagree somewhat. Ikea hinges are quite solid for their price-performance range. Of course, they are not designed for industrial heavy-duty furniture, but they hold up well in everyday use.

More often, the problem is caused by:

- incorrect assembly
- improper adjustment
- uneven walls or floors

Your frustration is understandable, but I recommend working through the process step by step.

Thanks to everyone for the detailed answers; this is already very helpful!

I will systematically adjust all the screws again today, as recommended: first the height, then the lateral position, and finally the depth, making sure beforehand that the cabinet is properly level.

If the doors still stick, I will check the hinges again and replace them if necessary.

I will get back with feedback on how it went.
