Hello everyone, I have an issue with the doors of my Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially during the summer months: the doors distort repeatedly, meaning they no longer close properly or they warp slightly and don’t shut flush. This is quite annoying, as it not only looks unpleasant but also affects their functionality.

I’ve read that wood reacts to heat by expanding or warping, but I don’t want to keep my living room permanently air-conditioned or undertake major renovations. Are there any proven tips or tricks to best prevent the warping of these Hemnes doors during the summer? I’m thinking of measures like controlling humidity, structural modifications, maintenance, or special adjustments to the hinges.

Please also feel free to share advice on how to deal with doors that are already warped, to manage the problem in a lasting way. Thanks in advance!

I know that well. HEMNES doors are mainly made of solid wood and react strongly to humidity and temperature changes. To prevent warping in summer, I recommend:

- Keep humidity stable, ideally around 45-55% relative humidity.
- Avoid direct sunlight, as it can heat the door unevenly and cause the wood to warp.
- Regularly adjust the hinges; with HEMNES they are somewhat flexible.
- For doors already warped, it can help to temporarily remove them and let them regain their shape in a damp but shaded room.

An air conditioner is not strictly necessary, but a humidifier can be very effective in summer.

Maintaining a constant humidity level is key. Place a humidifier in the room. Avoid direct sunlight on the doors. If necessary, remove the doors and lightly dampen them, then allow them to dry slowly.

Slightly moisten – yes, but not too much! Wooden doors are like us two; they feel bad when too dry and also when too damp. A little moisture as a care treatment can help the wood relax and straighten again.

I once heard a trick: remove the doors in the evening, wipe them with a slightly damp cloth, and hang them upside down overnight. Then rehang them in the morning – it seems to have worked for someone, provided you have some patience.

And of course, sunlight has clearly defined peak exposure times with HEMNES doors... so better to darken the room or close curtains when the sun is strong.
