Hello everyone, I have several Billy bookcases from IKEA, and I've noticed that some of the shelves wobble a bit or sag slightly in the middle. I'm interested in how to permanently prevent Billy shelves from wobbling or sagging. I’m specifically referring to the standard shelves without any additional reinforcements or metal inserts. Does anyone know of proven methods or useful hacks to make the shelves more stable without major modifications to the bookcase? Thanks for your tips!

Hello, I would recommend not overloading the shelves and adding a support in the middle of the shelf, for example, a wooden beam. This effectively prevents sagging.

Hello heiner48, your question is very well formulated and specific. Sagging in BILLY shelves often occurs due to the load and the material of the shelves. A simple method that helps many is to install an additional shelf support or a center brace. For example, you can screw a thin wooden batten under the shelf. This increases the load-bearing capacity and significantly reduces wobbling. Also, check if the shelf supports are properly and securely inserted, as this can also improve stability.

That is a good idea and also easy to implement for DIYers.

I understand how frustrating it can be when a shelf isn’t as stable as expected. I had a similar experience with my BILLY shelves. What helped me was properly securing the shelf to the wall – this reduces imbalance and wobbling. It also helps if the shelves are not overloaded. My advice would be: less weight, more secure fixing, and if possible, as already mentioned, an additional support in the middle. Hope this helps you a bit.

From a technical perspective, the issue with the BILLY shelf usually stems from the span and material thickness of the shelves, which are made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF). This makes them prone to bending under load. The load limit is about 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf, but this varies depending on position and usage.

To avoid wobbling and sagging, it is recommended to:

1. Use shelf supports that fit snugly and securely within the shelf frame.
2. Limit the load per shelf to around 20-25 kg (44-55 lbs) to reduce peak stress.
3. Reinforce the shelf with a central support—this can be a slender wooden or metal rod that helps stabilize the shelf against bending.
4. Alternatively, attach a thin plywood panel beneath the MDF shelf to increase its stiffness.
5. Ensure the shelf unit is perfectly vertical and secured to the wall.

Wobbling can also occur if the shelf does not sit flush or if the side panels of the unit are not tight.

I always use wooden strips and screw them underneath the shelves in the middle. This prevents sagging very effectively and is quick to do.
