Hello everyone,

I am planning to install several IKEA Metod cabinets with sliding doors in my kitchen and would appreciate your practical experience. Specifically, I want to know the best approach when fitting sliding doors instead of the usual hinged doors or drawers.

I am particularly interested in:
- What should I pay attention to when assembling the cabinet carcasses to ensure the sliding doors run smoothly and have no play?
- Are there any special tricks or tools to align the sliding tracks precisely?
- Which components from the IKEA range are necessary or recommended to securely and functionally mount sliding doors on Metod cabinets?
- How can I avoid common mistakes or problems with hanging and adjusting the doors based on your experience?
- Are there any size or combination limitations I should be aware of?

I already have a basic understanding of furniture assembly and can follow instructions but would like to gather practical tips for this rather unusual setup to save time and avoid stress. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Kifopo,

First of all, great job on approaching this topic in such detail! The Metod system with sliding doors is indeed not standard, but it is doable if you keep a few key points in mind.

Regarding the construction:
- Make sure the carcass is perfectly straight and square. Use a spirit level and a try square to check. Only a flawless base will allow the sliding doors to operate smoothly without sticking or unintentionally opening.

- For the running tracks, I always use the IKEA sliding door fittings from the corresponding range. The rails must be mounted exactly level. Tip: Use a longer spirit level and initially tighten all screws only by hand, then check the height and alignment again before fully tightening them.

- Avoid attaching sliding doors to just a single Metod carcass. It is better to have at least two connected cabinets side by side for increased stability of the rail brackets.

- What is often underestimated are the adjustment options for the doors: IKEA sliding door fittings usually have adjustment screws for height and lateral positioning. I recommend making these fine adjustments only after the doors are fully assembled.

- Ensure that the doors slightly overlap instead of meeting edge to edge. This ensures smooth operation without noise.

Regarding the combinations: The maximum width and height of the doors are critical. For larger sliding door systems, sturdy support profiles are beneficial to prevent sagging.

One last question: Are you planning your cabinets to be freestanding or built-in? This also slightly changes the installation conditions.

Thanks in advance for the quick and detailed response!

Regarding the question: The cabinets are fixed between two walls, meaning the space is basically predefined, and I want to equip the cabinets in an L-shaped kitchen layout with these sliding doors.

Would you approach installation differently in such a built-in setting? Are there any special installation steps or tools that are particularly helpful here?

Also: How do you handle the floor track? Does it have to be securely fastened, or is it possible to just glue it? Is that stable enough, or is screwing it better?

Furthermore: Are there any specific considerations regarding the depth of the Metod cabinet carcases when installing sliding doors? I have the 60cm (24 inch) depth, but that doesn’t leave much room for floor and top rails.

Looking forward to your feedback!

Hello Kifopo,

I’m happy to provide you with a structured guide including tips from my own experience for installing IKEA Metod cabinets with sliding doors in a built-in kitchen unit:

1. Preparation:
- Measure the wall widths and heights accurately. Plan the cabinets with installation tolerances of +/- 5 mm (0.2 inches). These can be compensated for by adjusting the doors.
- Ensure a stable, level surface with no unevenness.

2. Cabinet Assembly:
- Assemble the cabinet carcasses individually first and connect them into a row later. This allows you to align them individually.
- Secure the carcasses to the wall and floor with appropriate brackets to prevent shifting later.

3. Track Installation:
- The top and bottom tracks must be screwed in place. Adhesive alone is usually not sufficient, as the door weights and movement can cause problems.
- Pay attention to the floor profile matching the floor covering and cabinet depth. For example, you can use spacers if the cabinet front protrudes slightly.

4. Installing Sliding Doors:
- Hang the doors initially and adjust height, lateral position, and tilt using the small adjustment screws on the track components.
- Check that the doors do not rub and close evenly.

5. Fine Adjustment & Completion:
- Check multiple times over several days whether the doors settle or shift.
- Finally, tighten all screws on the tracks after adjustment.

With a depth of 60 cm (24 inches), precise measurement of the profile positions is essential to ensure sufficient clearance between the door and the cabinet carcass. Also, watch the load limits of the tracks, as they are not designed for very wide doors. For larger door sizes, you can add a center support if available.

I’m happy to help if you have any further questions!

Exactly. Screwing is mandatory to ensure the doors slide smoothly later.

For hanging: First, hang the doors straight in, then use the adjustment screws. Continuously check that they neither stick nor wobble.

And one more tip: When assembling the carcasses, make sure to maintain very precise angles. Only then will everything fit perfectly afterwards.
