I have noticed that the screws in my Ikea Metod kitchen frequently loosen, especially on the cabinet doors and at the mounting points of the carcasses. The problem is that while the screws hold initially, over time the constant stress and opening and closing motions cause them to become loose. I am looking for a permanent solution to secure these screws firmly and stably, without having to constantly tighten them or damage the wood. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to permanently fix these loose screws in Ikea Metod kitchen furniture? Are there proven techniques or specific products that can help? I am particularly interested in how to reinforce the often very soft particleboard in the furniture so that the screws hold reliably. Any assistance is appreciated!

I am very familiar with your problem; loose screws in Metod cabinets are really annoying and frustrating, especially since the furniture is otherwise quite well designed. I have often made repairs myself, and it turned out that the usual screws sometimes aren’t enough because the particleboard material isn’t ideal for long-term load.

One solution that helped me was using wood filler putty to prepare the screw holes, and then not applying too much force when tightening the screws to avoid overstressing the material. You can also mix Moltofill or a similar product with wood shavings to increase durability.

I understand how annoying it is to keep retightening—sometimes it’s just a material issue, which is common with Ikea furniture.

Try this: Remove the screws, fill the hole with wood glue, add some wood shavings, let it dry, and then insert a new screw. Alternatively, there are metal inserts for softwood. Screws hold better with these inserts.

To permanently secure the screws, I recommend the following systematic approach:

- Completely remove the screw.
- Clean out the old, often softened material in the hole using a small chisel or knife to create a clean repair surface.
- For the repair, you can use special wooden dowels or threaded inserts (metal inserts) that are fixed into the drill hole. This significantly increases the load-bearing capacity.
- Alternatively, the drill hole can be filled with an epoxy-based wood filler. After curing, the screws can be reinserted.

Using common wood filler compounds is usually insufficient because they do not remain mechanically strong enough. Metal inserts provide a durable advantage, especially at frequently stressed connection points of kitchen furniture.

Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to know. The idea of using metal inserts sounds good. Are there specific sizes that work better with the Metod series? I want to avoid drilling holes that are too large and not significantly weaken the stability of the panels.

Would you recommend enlarging the hole beforehand or working with the existing hole? Are there specific dimensions I should be aware of when switching to the inserts?

Metod kitchen cabinets are mostly made from particleboard with a melamine-coated surface. Depending on the thickness, they have a limited ability to hold screws.

For a long-lasting repair, I recommend:

- Using threaded inserts (metal inserts) designed specifically for softwood, available in various diameters (e.g., M6 or M8).
- Drilling the hole precisely to match the insert diameter so that it fits tightly and provides a strong thread.
- It is advisable to enlarge the old hole with an appropriate drill and clean the material thoroughly.
- Then, set the insert flush using a special installation tool or screwdriver.

This creates a wear-resistant fastener that can be opened and closed multiple times without losing strength.

Relying solely on wood glue is not recommended, as it cannot permanently withstand the stresses involved in kitchen use.
