ᐅ How can I optimize the lighting in an IKEA Metod kitchen to create a more atmospheric ambiance?

OnyasinHello everyone,
I have an Ikea Metod kitchen and have noticed that the lighting in my room feels quite plain. Therefore, I am considering how to improve the lighting to create a cozier, more inviting atmosphere without compromising the kitchen’s practical functionality. I’m especially thinking about combining different light sources, color temperatures, dimmability, and possibly smart controls.
Does anyone have tips or experience with which types of fixtures (for example, LED spots, light strips, or pendant lights) work well with Metod kitchen cabinets? And what should be considered during planning and installation to make the lighting not only practical but also atmospherically effective?
I look forward to your opinions and advice!

In the Metod kitchen, LED strips installed under the wall cabinets work very well. They provide bright task lighting.
Additionally, I recommend dimmable pendant lights above the kitchen island, if there is one. This way, you can create ambiance when you want a cozier atmosphere.

I can fully understand how important pleasant lighting in the kitchen is, especially with Metod, which often has a rather straightforward and functional design.
Personally, I’ve had good experiences with LED light strips installed under the upper cabinets. They aren’t too harsh but provide enough light for cooking. I’ve also installed a dimmable ceiling light from IKEA that offers different shades of white—this makes a big difference in the evenings.
I also think it’s important to define different lighting zones: bright light for the work surfaces and warmer, softer light for the dining area or kitchen island, if there is one. Combining these creates a much more inviting kitchen atmosphere.
I understand that electrical work can sometimes seem intimidating, but with IKEA Metod kitchens the interfaces are well designed. If you’re unsure, I’m happy to share some tips on installing light strips.

I understand that electrical engineering can sometimes seem intimidatingI totally agree with that, but honestly, I think lighting is often overrated – many people get huge designer lamps and forget that atmosphere mainly comes from the room itself and the furniture.
Sure, dimmable lights and a few LEDs are nice, but for Metod kitchens, a simple warm white LED strip under the wall cabinets and a few small spotlights directed towards the wall to add depth to the room are usually enough.
If you overdo the lighting, it quickly feels artificial. My advice: less is more, as long as the main work areas are well lit. For a genuine cozy feel, accessories and colors make the difference.
