Hello everyone,
I’m moving into a new rental apartment and want to set up my Billy shelves from IKEA. Unfortunately, I’m not allowed to drill into the walls, so I want to avoid damaging them. My question is: How can I securely and stably attach Billy shelves to the wall without drilling, so they won’t tip over or wobble? What well-known fastening methods or products are reliable, easy to install, and can be removed later without leaving marks?
I would really appreciate any specific tips and experiences – including with special products!

I’m also concerned that tension rods might visually interfere with the furniture; are there more discreet options available? It’s understandable that you want a good appearance. A somewhat less noticeable option would be to use so-called “pressure fasteners” or “pressure rods” made of wood or painted metal tubes that match the color of the furniture. These can be customized to blend in with the shelving unit and therefore stand out less than traditional aluminum telescopic rods. For some, you can even add decorative covers or casings.
If you opt for adhesive anchors, I recommend combining them with a backing support: the shelf should not be placed directly against the wall but have a few millimeters (inches) of clearance so that the adhesive strips can securely attach to the inside back of the shelf. Another option is angle bracket solutions that are adhesive and come with protective pads to prevent wall damage.
The floor is equally important: in addition to using non-slip materials under the shelf, the floor should be properly prepared overall to prevent the shelf from tipping.
One more question: how sensitive is your landlord regarding marks on walls and floors when you move out? Some adhesive anchors leave minimal residue, which can usually be removed quite easily with special adhesive removers.
