Hello everyone, I rent my apartment and would like to use IKEA Billy bookcases without drilling into the walls. Since wall drilling is usually not allowed in my apartment and I don’t want to damage the walls, I’m looking for alternative mounting options to set up the shelves securely and stably. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to install Billy bookcases without damaging the wall? Maybe with special clamp or tension systems, freestanding versions, or other mounting aids? I look forward to your suggestions and practical advice!

From a technical standpoint, there is no permanent and completely safe solution without wall mounting if you want to secure a BILLY shelf to the wall—the risk of tipping over remains.

The safest option is using tension rods from floor to ceiling combined with hanging rails that secure the shelf from above. This method is commonly used in retail construction and does not leave permanent marks on the walls.

Be cautious with adhesive products: although they are wall-friendly, they often aren’t sufficient for loaded shelves. If drilling must be avoided, it’s better to use freestanding furniture or different types of shelving.

I find your question very understandable[...] There are definitely effective alternatives that respect the rental situation.

I completely agree. It can be frustrating at times when you want to follow the rules in a rental property but still need to maintain order.

I have had good experiences with a combination of freestanding shelving and small, removable brackets that can take limited load on door frames—of course, only if the landlord considers the door frames non-critical.

Sometimes it also helps to discuss this openly with the landlord and obtain written permission for minimally invasive fixings. This can save you trouble later on.

Keep at it; there are ways to achieve a neat setup without causing damage!
