I have a problem with some of the doors on my IKEA Metod kitchen fronts: they squeak noticeably when I open or close them. The noise always comes from the hinges, even though I have adjusted them several times. I am aware that there are different types of hinges for Metod (for example, soft-close or standard), but the squeaking occurs with all variants.
I have not yet tried lubricating or cleaning the hinges because I am not sure which lubricant is suitable or if it is even advisable to do so without damaging the mechanism, especially with the IKEA hinges.
Has anyone had experience with how to best fix or prevent squeaking IKEA Metod doors? What products or methods are recommended? Do the hinges need to be completely removed for this purpose? And if lubrication helps – which product is best to avoid damaging the mechanism?
Thanks for your advice!

Hello Marlaurits,
Regarding the issue of squeaky IKEA Metod doors, I can explain in more detail how you can fix the problem. The squeaking usually occurs due to insufficient lubrication or deposits in the hinge mechanism.
Here is a simple step-by-step guide:
- First, carefully remove the door. This is relatively easy with Metod systems by pressing the metal clip on the hinge and lifting the door off.
- Clean the hinge thoroughly. Dust, grease residues, or even small dirt particles often accumulate in the hinge, causing the noise.
- For lubrication, I recommend a light, non-sticky lubricant such as silicone spray or a special fine mechanics oil. WD-40 is common but more of a penetrating oil and can attract dust, which is counterproductive in the long term.
- Apply the lubricant sparingly directly to the moving metal parts of the hinge, where the metals meet and move against each other.
- After lubricating, manually open and close the hinge several times to help distribute the oil.
- Then rehang the door and adjust if necessary.
Common mistakes include applying too much oil, which later attracts dirt, or failing to clean the hinges beforehand. If you keep these points in mind, the squeaking noises should disappear.
If parts such as plastic bushings are damaged, the only solution is a complete replacement of the hinge. I hope this helps you!
Best regards!

I would also question whether the lubricant is always to blame. In some cases, doors squeak because the hinge was not correctly adjusted or due to material fatigue of the plastic components within the hinge.
Therefore, it makes sense to carefully check before a repair whether the door is aligned parallel and the hinge does not have excessive play. Simply improving lubrication can only help to a limited extent if there is a mechanical defect.
Perhaps we could also address the question of how to properly adjust IKEA Metod hinges here? Sometimes users ignore adjustment and try to "fix" the problem only with lubricant, which is not the best solution.
