Hello everyone,

I have owned several IKEA BESTÅ cabinets for some time, and with one of them, I’m having an issue where the doors no longer close properly or seem slightly misaligned. Specifically, the door does not close evenly against the frame at the top or bottom and feels slightly warped, which also causes a slight catch when closing. The hinges are the type with adjustable screws.

My question is: How can I best repair or adjust misaligned doors on IKEA BESTÅ cabinets myself? Which screws should be adjusted for which directions, and are there common mistakes or installation tips to ensure the doors fit correctly and close smoothly?

Has anyone had experience with this system or can provide a step-by-step guide on how to approach this problem?

Thank you in advance for your advice and tips!

How can I best repair or adjust misaligned doors on IKEA BESTÅ cabinets myself?

The IKEA BESTÅ doors feature adjustable concealed hinges, which typically allow for three types of adjustments:

- Horizontal: Side-to-side adjustment is done via a screw directly on the hinge, allowing the door to move left or right.
- Vertical: The door can be raised or lowered by adjusting the mounting plate on the cabinet body.
- Depth: This adjusts how close the door sits against the cabinet frame, usually via a screw on the hinge itself.

For adjustment, the best approach is:

1. Open the door.
2. If needed, slightly loosen the mounting screws to allow some movement.
3. First adjust the vertical position to get the door aligned in height.
4. Then adjust horizontally to ensure even alignment.
5. Finally, adjust the depth so the door sits flush with the cabinet frame.

A common mistake is turning one screw too much without considering the other adjustment axes. It’s best to make small adjustments step by step, closing the door after each to check the fit.

I also recommend inspecting the hinges for damage or wear, especially if they are older. In case of severe deformation, replacing the hinges might be advisable.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

For adjustment, it is best to proceed as follows:

In addition to Rodolfo’s post, I would like to add some details that can make adjusting the BESTÅ doors more precise:

- First, make sure that the cabinet itself is level and stable. An uneven base will directly affect the doors.
- The BESTÅ hinges are folding types with two to three adjustment screws:
- The screw on the side allows for horizontal movement.
- The screw attaching the hinge to the cabinet is often for vertical adjustment.
- There is often another screw to regulate the closing force or depth.
- When adjusting, be careful not to apply too much pressure. The plastic parts and metal reinforcements can deform otherwise.
- If the door still catches or does not close properly despite correct adjustment, also check the seal or any foreign objects in the hinge area.

My tip: To align the door even more precisely, you can adjust in several steps—first one axis, then the other, and then fine-tune again. Small adjustments often have a big impact.

Could you also specify whether the doors have a glass front or a classic wood finish? If glass, the hinges might be sized differently.

If the door sticks or doesn’t close properly despite correct adjustment, also check the seal and look for any debris in the hinge area.

This is important. I would add:

- Completely loosen the hinge screws and realign the door.
- Then carefully tighten the screws again.
- For severely misaligned doors, installing new hinges often helps.

Many problems are caused by overtightening.

How can I best repair or adjust crooked doors on IKEA BESTÅ cabinets myself?

For adjusting the BESTÅ doors, I recommend carefully reviewing the included instructions for the door hinges, as they usually provide a clear overview of the adjustment options.

If the doors stick at several points, it can also help to clean the hinges by removing dust and small particles, since these can restrict movement.

Another tip: Check whether the shelves inside the cabinet are overloaded or warped around the frame. This can also affect the doors.

If the doors remain permanently crooked, IKEA offers replacement parts that simplify the exchange. Careful, targeted maintenance of the hinges can make a big difference in the long run.
