I have installed Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets in my kitchen, and one of the doors has started to squeak increasingly when I open or close it. The doors are equipped with the standard hinges that Ikea uses.

I suspect the issue might be with the hinges themselves, the mounting, or possibly a lack of lubrication. I am particularly interested in how to fix the squeaking permanently and preferably without special tools or expensive replacement parts.

Are there proven methods or step-by-step guides for this type of repair? Do I need to remove the doors, tighten screws, or do I really have to replace the hinges completely?

I would appreciate if someone with experience in this area could provide some precise tips—preferably including advice on common mistakes to avoid.

Hello jopudeo, I’m happy to help!

The squeaking of Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet doors is a common issue, usually caused by a lack of lubrication or wear on the hinges. Here is a short tutorial:

- First, carefully unscrew the door using a screwdriver by loosening the screws on the hinges. This gives you better access to the problem.
- Check the hinges for visible damage or roughness on the metal.
- Then, apply a small amount of silicone-based oil or a specialized hinge lubricant to the moving parts. Although WD-40 is well known, it is not ideal because it can attract dirt.
- Open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.
- After that, tighten all screws again, but don’t overtighten them, as this can risk damaging the wood.

A common mistake is never lubricating the hinges or applying too much oil, which attracts dirt and eventually causes more grime rather than improvement.

If this does not help, you should replace the hinges— Ikea offers original replacement hinges that are easy to install. Good luck!

Exactly, that's how I eliminated the squeaking on my Metod cabinets as well. Just a few drops, then move the parts several times. No expensive tools needed.

I would like to address the issue in more detail because the cause of squeaking in Metod doors can be quite complex.

First: Ikea uses clip-on 165° hinges for Metod, which, despite their simple design, are durable but can squeak when exposed to moisture or dust.

Procedure:

- Remove the door: Press the plastic clips on the hinge and lift the door off.
- Visual inspection: Check if the plastic covers on the hinges are still intact and free from cracks or breaks.
- Clean the mechanism: Once the hinge is accessible, remove dust or dirt with a dry cloth.
- Lubrication: PTFE sprays (Teflon-based) are highly recommended because they do not become sticky. Silicone spray is an alternative, but never use mineral oil-based lubricants.
- Position of the hinges: Sometimes the cabinet fronts are slightly warped, causing tension on the doors, which can be corrected by adjusting the hinge arms.
- Check the screws: Hinges have adjustment screws (height, depth, angle) that should be checked.

A very common mistake is to skip cleaning before lubricating — dirt otherwise mixes with the lubricant and increases squeaking.

If you like, I can also send you detailed instructions on the adjustment screws. What are the environmental conditions of your kitchen (humidity, dust levels)?

Thanks for the detailed response! My kitchen is quite modern and well-ventilated, with no increased humidity from cooking or similar activities; the room usually stays dry. Dust levels are also not particularly high.

So, I will first take the door off the hinges, carefully check and clean them before lubricating with a PTFE spray. The adjustable screws sound interesting; I will take a closer look at them.

What I’m still unclear about is this: after lubricating, when opening and closing the door several times—could the door’s alignment shift on its own, or does the position only change through adjusting the screws?

If yes, how much does the door’s alignment typically change just from movement after lubrication?

Thanks in advance for all the tips!
