Hello everyone,

I have a problem with a door from the Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet system. The door has been hanging crooked for some time now, which not only looks bad but also makes closing it difficult. It is a 40 cm (16 inches) wide door attached with Ikea standard hinges that have two mounting points.

I suspect that the misalignment is caused by an improperly adjusted or loosely hung door, but I’m not sure exactly how to best proceed to realign the door correctly. Is there a reliable step-by-step guide to fix this issue? I have read online that you can adjust the screws on the hinges, but so far this has only been somewhat clear to me, as I don’t fully understand some of the technical terms.

I would be very grateful for a detailed explanation that also covers possible causes for the door hanging crooked and how to prevent it from happening again in the long term. Maybe someone here has experience repairing Metod doors.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Hunter7,

First of all: Your description is already very good, which greatly helps in planning the solution. The misalignment of an Ikea Metod door usually results from one of three main causes:

- Incorrect adjustment of the hinge screws (vertical, horizontal, depth)
- Loose fastening screws on the hinges or on the cabinet frame
- Warped door or cabinet frame, which is less common but cannot be ruled out

To achieve perfect alignment of your door, it’s best to follow these steps:

1. Open the door and check all the screws on the hinges to ensure they are tight. This prevents any screws from being loose and the hinges from moving.

2. On the Ikea Metod hinges, you will typically find three adjustment screws:
- The vertical screw: This allows you to align the door up and down.
- The horizontal screw: This adjusts the door closer to or away from the cabinet frame.
- The depth screw: This controls the gap between the door and the cabinet frame.

3. To straighten the door, first slightly loosen the vertical screw and shift the door until it hangs straight. Then tighten the screw again.

4. Next, proceed to adjust the horizontal screw to make corrections in that direction.

5. Finally, adjust the depth screw as desired to avoid unsightly gaps.

One more tip: Use a spirit level to ensure precise adjustment of the door. The hinges are designed to allow fine tuning, but following the correct sequence and taking care makes a big difference.

If you like, I can also provide the exact names and positions of the screws based on the hinge model. Do you know which hinge model you have installed? There are slight variations.

Best regards!

Thank you very much for your detailed explanation, Filippo! Yes, I have the standard Ikea Metod hinges, the full bore damped hinges that are mounted directly on the inner side of the door. I think they are the T15 models, but I’m not completely sure. So the screw arrangement related to your point 2 would fit?

I will try your sequence of steps tomorrow and use a spirit level. I hope I can adjust the door as straight as possible since this misalignment is quite annoying in daily use.

I’ll get back to you if I have any more questions.

Hi Hunter7,

just a quick reminder: First, make sure to check the mounting screws on the cabinet and the door. Then adjust the hinge screws horizontally and vertically. Only adjust the depth screw at the very end. That is usually sufficient.

Hey Hunter7! Great that you’re tackling the problem – the Metod door is really easy to fix!

I had the same issue with my kitchen, and it feels so good when the door fits perfectly again! Just take it step by step, like Filippo described, and don’t rush. I was able to adjust all the screws with a standard Phillips screwdriver.

If you notice the door sticking or not closing properly, always double-check the depth adjustment screw. And remember: unevenly tightened screws can ruin everything, so it’s better to make small fine adjustments.

Good luck, you’ll manage it! 🙂

To add:

If the door still has misalignment or remains at an angle despite adjustments, it is worth checking the hinge mounting on the cabinet side. Sometimes the mounting plate is not positioned exactly and may be slightly twisted.

You can fix this by loosening the mounting plate’s lock, shifting it slightly, and then securing it again. This allows for precise door positioning.

It is also important to check the cabinet itself for any warping. If the cabinet is warped, even perfect door adjustment will not provide a long-term solution.

Accurate work with a spirit level and adjustment screws is the key to success.
