ᐅ How can I efficiently assemble Ikea Metod cabinets with soft-close drawers?

Cornel42Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to assemble several Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets with soft-close drawers myself and am looking for tips on how to work most efficiently. I know that Ikea’s instructions are quite detailed, but I want to avoid wasting time on unnecessary steps while also preventing mistakes that could be costly or frustrating later on.
I am especially interested in:
- What assembly sequence do you recommend to ensure the drawers with the soft-close mechanism run smoothly and without the need for adjustment?
- Are there any tools that are particularly helpful or even essential?
- What common pitfalls can be avoided, especially when installing the soft-close rails and guide systems?
Perhaps some of you have experience assembling multiple cabinets at once – how do you best organize the work in such cases?
Thank you in advance for your detailed and practical advice!

Hello Cornel42,
Your project sounds very well organized, which is already a big advantage. I have been doing this regularly for years and would be happy to give you a detailed overview of the efficient assembly of Metod cabinets with soft-close drawers.
First: Plan your workspace carefully. I recommend sorting all parts beforehand – this saves time during assembly so you don’t have to constantly look through the instructions. For the soft-close drawers: group the rails and fittings for each drawer together to avoid mix-ups.
Tools:
- Cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque (to avoid damaging the wood)
- Level (to align the cabinet carcass properly later, which affects the soft-close function)
- Rubber mallet if needed for precise fitting control
Procedure:
- First, fully assemble each cabinet carcass part (back panel, sides, bottom, top). Be careful not to nail the back panels too tightly, as this can cause warping.
- Next, install the drawer rivets and drawer bottom; this is often a tricky step, especially if the drill holes are slightly off.
- Now mount the soft-close rails: install these with the utmost precision according to the instructions. Minor angle deviations can cause problems with drawer movement.
Regarding the order: I assemble all carcasses and level them before installing the drawers. You can build the drawers in parallel and then insert them into the carcasses. This saves time.
Common pitfalls:
- Do not tighten the drawer slides too much
- Secure the cabinet doors cleanly
- Test the soft-close mechanism multiple times beforehand
Tip: Allow extra time for final assembly and adjustment. Sometimes small fine-tuning of the rails is necessary.
Do you need details on specific steps or have a particular configuration in mind?

1. Preparation:
- Sort all parts
- Prepare tools (cordless screwdriver with Phillips bit, spirit level, clamps for fixing)
2. Cabinet assembly:
- Connect the side panels
- Insert the back panel, paying attention to screw thickness; do not hammer too tightly to maintain stability
- Carefully ensure precise right-angle alignment
3. Installing the soft-close rails:
- Mark the drill holes in advance, using the original holes as a reference
- Screw the rails firmly without overtightening; minor adjustments will be easier later
4. Assembling the drawers:
- Insert rivets correctly, making sure the drawer bottoms fit securely and do not wobble
5. Inserting and adjusting:
- Insert the drawers, then adjust their height and depth using the adjustment mechanisms
- Test the soft-close function several times; if it does not run smoothly, make small adjustments to the rails first
Common time-consuming mistakes:
- Disorganized parts layout leads to searching time
- Over-tightening screws blocks the mechanism
- Careless alignment that requires re-adjustment
The work can be well parallelized if one helper assembles the drawers while you finish the cabinets. This way, you avoid waiting times for parts.

Install the drawers, then use the adjustment mechanisms to fine-tune the height and depth of the drawersThat’s a very good point! At first, I had trouble with the soft-close drawers because I underestimated the adjustment process and got quite frustrated when they didn’t latch properly. It was pretty annoying, but once I took a closer look and used the adjustment options, everything went smoothly.
You really need to take your time with the fine-tuning. It’s usually not a big deal, but rushing is definitely the biggest enemy here.
Also, if you’re building several cabinets at once, be careful not to just do everything like an assembly line. Taking breaks helps maintain focus and avoid mistakes. Seeing the finished cabinet is really rewarding – so being patient pays off.
Personally, it also helped me to work on a clean, well-lit workspace to avoid accidentally losing the small parts.
Don’t get discouraged if a drawer gets stuck. With a little patience, it can be fixed.

What order do you recommend for assembly so that the drawers with soft-close mechanism operate smoothly and without needing readjustment? As a standard procedure, first fully assemble the carcass, then install the rails, followed by building and fitting the drawers.

Take extra time for the final assembly and adjustment.I agree. Spending a few extra minutes on adjustments saves a lot of trouble later.
