Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of disassembling my IKEA Platsa shelves to reassemble them at a different location. Since the components are quite delicate and I want to avoid damage to the sides and connection points, I am looking for a careful and systematic approach.

Does anyone have experience with taking apart and putting together Platsa shelves without causing splitting, stripping screw holes, or damaging the surface?

I have seen that some professionals recommend loosening screws slowly and evenly, but are there any additional tips for handling the panels, storing the individual parts, or dealing with dowels and fittings?

I would appreciate detailed advice to ensure the move goes smoothly and that I can use the shelves again in as close to new condition as possible.

Hey Nitojan, great topic – IKEA furniture is definitely charming, but can sometimes be tricky to assemble and disassemble! 😊

Regarding the Platsa shelves: the key is really not to force the screws out. It’s better to loosen them gradually in small turns and occasionally move the parts gently to relieve the pressure on the wood.

A little tip: if you’re using a cordless screwdriver, make sure it’s not set to full power – that can easily damage the material. It’s best to work carefully with low torque.

When it comes to storage: lay the parts flat, avoiding stacking them upside down to prevent warping. Enthusiastic Platsa fans also recommend applying a small amount of wood glue or assembly paste into the dowel holes if you want to avoid loose connections.

Take your time, and everything should stay intact! 😉

Always completely unscrew the screws; otherwise, the panels may crack. Remove the wall plugs carefully to avoid enlarging the holes. Store the panels flat.

It is important to follow the correct sequence during disassembly: start by removing the rear panels, as these often serve as stabilizers. Then detach the side and floor panels.

Avoid prying the panels to prevent cracks. Instead, use an appropriate screwdriver and work evenly. When reassembling, marking the connection points is helpful for precise alignment.

That is correct. Additionally, I recommend:
- Sorting screws and anchors into small bags to keep all fasteners organized and avoid losing them.
- Using an Allen key with a precise fit to prevent damage to the screw heads.
- Inspecting individual parts for damage before final reassembly and smoothing out any rough spots with fine sandpaper if necessary.
- Distributing tension evenly across wood joints during assembly to prevent pressure marks.

This approach minimizes the risk of material damage to the Platsa system components.

Exactly, taking out the back panels is a step many people underestimate. They hold everything together, and if you detach them incorrectly, the whole shelf can collapse – and that causes parts to fly around, making damage almost inevitable.

Here’s a handy tip: I developed a simple system where I label each panel with a sticky note – this helps me keep track, especially when there are multiple sections. It saves a lot of stress and prevents scratches because you don’t have to force anything back together!
