Hello everyone, I would like to customize my Ikea Besta doors and am looking for good ideas and techniques on how to best apply colors and patterns. I’m especially interested in durable and clean methods that are not only visually appealing but also as easy to carry out as possible. Specifically, I would like to know which types of paint are most suitable (e.g., acrylic, spray paint, chalk paint), what the ideal surface preparation should look like if I want to apply different patterns (e.g., geometric, floral, abstract), and if there are any special tips for creating smooth color gradients or stencil techniques on painted doors. Does anyone have experience with such projects or maybe even a step-by-step guide? I would appreciate detailed advice, including potential pitfalls. Thank you!
I have had good experiences with spray paint. First, sand the surface lightly, then apply several thin layers. For patterns, I used stencils made from heavy paper or plastic. This way, you get very sharp edges. Afterwards, seal it with clear coat; otherwise, scratches will appear quickly.
It is also important to let the doors dry thoroughly after painting, ideally for 24 hours. Otherwise, the paint may remain sticky or develop stains.
How is the room temperature where you are working? If you are in a relatively cool room, the drying time will increase significantly.

Possible issues can be paint layers that are too thick, which then peel off, or surfaces that haven’t been sanded enough. Thanks kulau, that helps a lot. Do you think lightly sanding the surface (with 240-grit sandpaper) is enough for acrylic paints? Or should it be a bit coarser? Also, tra_nina mentioned primer here—do you or anyone else have recommendations for primers that work particularly well on melamine-coated Besta doors?

If you want to work with patterns, you can also use washi tape to mask off geometric shapes – it works great on smooth doors and allows for precise lines. This is especially interesting to me since I like working with sharply defined lines. Has anyone had experience with washi tape versus painter’s tape for these kinds of doors? Which one sticks less strongly and is easier to remove without pulling off the paint?
