ᐅ Flush Doors – Left-Hand or Right-Hand Hinged?

Hello,

I want to order doors tomorrow from the local specialist dealer. Before that: of course, I will discuss this topic with the dealer as well, but I am currently a bit confused and would like to understand on my own what door handing means for flush-fitting doors before I go to the dealer tomorrow.

Attached is a section of the floor plan showing the doors including the opening directions.

The opening direction will be changed for two doors. For the guest bathroom, the door should open outward, towards the main bathroom. The same applies to the storage room, meaning it should open not towards the kitchen, but towards the bathroom.

Could you please tell me, for each door, what type of handing it is?

I want to order as follows:
- Office 834x2097mm (33x82 inches), solid core including sound insulation
- Child’s room and bedroom 834x2097mm (33x82 inches), hollow core
- Bathroom 834x2097mm (33x82 inches), solid core
- Guest bathroom and storage room 709x2097mm (28x82 inches), hollow core

Does this look correct so far? Only the handing remains to be clarified.

The doors will be from the manufacturer Grauthoff, model Astra with flush edges and frame with Smart2 edge (probably better suited for flush-fitting doors).

Thank you very much in advance!

And if you want to do it consistently and choose flush doors, you also need to find a different solution than baseboards. Otherwise, it looks odd.

So it looks odd in that case? Please clarify.

P.S.
We have offers from other door manufacturers (with flush-closing doors and CPL white lacquer finish) for less than €1000 (including installation).

For example:
98.5 x 211 x 27 cm (39 x 83 x 11 inches) = €800
86.0 x 211 x 14.5 cm (34 x 83 x 6 inches) = €700

This refers to the flush door. When the door and the wall form a flat surface, a baseboard at the bottom looks out of place. Just search for "flush door" and look at the images. You will see that usually no baseboard is used. Some do use it because the baseboard is the most economical solution. But in my opinion, it is not consistent.

My impression of the Bauhaus style is that although many things look simple and plain, their execution is often quite complex and expensive...

I still don’t really understand what makes a butt hinge door so complicated, apart from the concealed hinge. Your prices make my knees weak. Or is that solid wood with lacquer? For CPL with chipboard at least 2 to 3 times too expensive in my opinion.

It is not real wood; that would probably require a carpenter’s work, which would be in a completely different price range. I looked up the specifications:

Thickness 60 mm (2.4 inches)
Frame 4-sided MDF plus vertical stabilizer
Core 10 mm (0.4 inches) HDF
Rabbet / counter-rabbet 15 x 18 mm (0.6 x 0.7 inches)
Hinges / surface Tectus 541 3d FVZ stainless steel look
Insert special F / composite board
Lock BB silent lock class 3, stainless steel faceplate with logo
Surface veneer cross-grain, edges lengthwise (natural plus lacquer)
Surface painted with multilayer PUR hand lacquer

If anyone in this forum can recommend a significantly cheaper source, I would appreciate it and have a great start to the Sunday 🙂

Input from @EA-TEC would be interesting, as they apparently just had an appointment with the specialist dealer?

"ASTRA" – Door Leaf with Frame
Construction: 40 mm (1.6 inches) hollow core chipboard / Climate class 1 / Stress class N
Door leaf thickness: approx. 40 mm (1.6 inches)
Rebate: flush closing
ZERO GAP
Frame board: smart2
Cladding: smart2 cladding – width 60 cm (24 inches)
Decorative trim adjustable +15 mm (+0.6 inches) / -5 mm (-0.2 inches)
Hinges: 2 milling grooves for Simons TECTUS TE 303 3D
Hinge mounts: hinge pockets TECTUS TE 303 3D FZ, galvanized
(incl. Simons TECTUS TE 303 3D, F1 colored)
Lock: BB magnetic lock, 55D, 20 x 235 mm (0.8 x 9.3 inches), stainless steel faceplate
Strike plate: magnetic strike plate, stainless steel
Surface finish: white lacquer similar to RAL 9010, CPL

CPL was chosen because we have a small daughter and CPL is the most durable surface.

The extra cost for flush closing compared to standard closing is moderate – it gets significantly more expensive with wall-flush doors!

Price per door (leaf including frame) under €500 gross. A solid core door costs €30 gross more. Door handles add about €50 gross. Doors are 211 cm (83 inches) high, with two doors having a 73 cm (29 inches) leaf width, and four doors with an 86 cm (34 inches) leaf width (approximate – I don’t have the exact dimensions at hand, but these are the standard sizes).
