Hello everyone, I am currently planning to convert the IKEA BESTÅ system into a lowboard while maximizing storage space. My question is: What modular options and structural modifications are useful to optimally adapt the BESTÅ specifically as a lowboard with storage? I am thinking about the ideal height, the number of compartments, the use of drawers or doors, and how to make the whole setup stable and visually appealing. Does anyone have experience with such conversions or tips on which materials or additional elements work well? I would greatly appreciate detailed suggestions, especially regarding possible custom builds or extensions that can be combined with BESTÅ.

What modular options and structural modifications make sense to optimally convert the BESTÅ specifically into a lowboard with storage?Hey Minti, I find your question really interesting because I’ve also been considering building the BESTÅ as a lowboard. I had similar thoughts: balancing storage capacity and appearance is indeed tricky. What helped me was choosing lower modules (around 38 cm (15 inches) in height) and then adding extra top panels and plinths to achieve the right lowboard height. Stability is important, so always make sure the individual modules are securely connected. I reinforced the inside walls of the compartments with thin boards because the original material feels a bit flimsy otherwise. I found drawers very practical, but sometimes doors offer more storage since you can also fit larger items inside. So, I would recommend a mix of both. Looking forward to more tips here!
Regarding stability: The basic structure of the BESTÅ is suitable for lowboards; however, if you require greater load capacity and stability, I recommend adding additional internal bracing. The height depends entirely on your intended use and TV size, but modules around 38–40 cm (15–16 inches) are generally suitable. For storage, it’s worthwhile to include compartments with doors in addition to drawers, as this offers more flexibility. It is also advisable to reinforce the back panels—for example, some use plywood instead of the thin back panel provided. When it comes to drawers, make sure to choose smooth-running slides; higher-quality drawer runners can be screwed in and retrofitted.
Hello Minti, some time ago I built a BESTÅ lowboard with storage and can give you the following recommendations:
- Planning: Measure the available space precisely and decide how tall you want your lowboard to be. Around 40 cm (16 inches) is suitable for TVs.
- Choosing modules: Use individual BESTÅ carcass modules (e.g., 120x40x38 cm (47x16x15 inches)) as a base.
- Reinforcement: Inside the modules, you can install small metal angle brackets for extra stability. This prevents sagging.
- Storage: A combination of drawers and doors works best – drawers for smaller items, doors for larger ones.
- Base: A plinth profile gives the furniture a lighter look and can be easily screwed together.
- Top surface: I placed an MDF board with the desired finish on top and attached it with snap fasteners. This allows you to replace it if needed.
- Accessories: IKEA offers matching shelves for BESTÅ, so you can arrange the interior very flexibly.
Common mistake: Not securing the back panel properly. I recommend cutting a plywood board to fit and inserting it into the groove. This makes everything much more stable. Good luck with your project!

Metal brackets at the connection points of the individual modules ensure stability.
You can use an MDF board as a cover; this provides additional stability and looks good.
For storage, it is better to combine open compartments at the back for larger items with drawers at the front for smaller things.
