Hello everyone,

I would like to start a discussion on the topic: "How can I gently and effectively clean Ikea Metod fronts?"

I have kitchen fronts from Ikea’s Metod system, which have a lacquered surface. It is important to me that the cleaning is thorough but does not damage the surface. I often read that harsh cleaners or abrasive cloths can damage the lacquer, which I definitely want to avoid.

Can you share tips on which cleaning agents or methods have proven effective? And what negative experiences have you perhaps had? I am especially interested in practical advice on cleaning cloths, cleaning agents (whether special dish soap, vinegar, alcohol, or ready-made cleaners), and how you remove grease stains or fingerprints in an eco-friendly and surface-friendly way.

It would also be great if you could briefly mention how often you clean the fronts and whether you use any special procedures to protect the lacquer in the long term. Thanks in advance!

I usually use warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap and a soft microfiber cloth. Very important: no abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals. This works well for removing grease—just wipe with a damp cloth and then dry. In most cases, that’s enough.

Oh yes, I love my Metod fronts and want to take care of them like a treasure! 😊 I always use a soft microfiber or cotton cloth with lukewarm water and a drop of mild dish soap. After that, everything is sparkling clean with no scratches in sight!

If there are stubborn stains, I try using some diluted vinegar water – but not too often, or the surface might get damaged.

Stay tuned, everyone – with the right care, the fronts will last forever! And remember, fingerprints are also a sign of life in the kitchen! 😉

This is an important point. Metod fronts with lacquer or foil finishes are sensitive to acidic and abrasive cleaning solutions. According to product specifications from Ikea, a mild soap solution or pH-neutral cleaners are recommended. Vinegar or harsh household remedies can damage the surface with repeated use.

I recommend always testing first in an inconspicuous area.

Also, please avoid using scouring pads or cloths with rough textures, as these can cause micro-scratches that dull the finish.

For grease, a soft microfiber cloth with lukewarm water and a mild grease remover is advisable. Afterwards, the surface should be wiped dry with a soft cloth to prevent water spots.

Regular cleaning about once a week is sufficient to prevent heavy soiling.

I sometimes wonder if all this obsession with cleanliness is a bit over the top. Sure, you can damage the surfaces with too much pressure or harsh cleaners, but honestly: a cabinet front isn’t a priceless work of art, it’s a functional item. A few small scratches actually add character!

Besides, I think many people are just too cautious and stick too rigidly to the instructions – when often a normal cloth and water work just as well without making a big deal out of it.

Of course, choosing the right cleaning agent is important, but in my opinion, there is no perfect “holy grail” for gentle cleaning. If you love your cabinet fronts, you should be able to use them without constantly worrying about ruining them.
