Hello everyone, I have a specific question for the community regarding the cleaning of Ikea Hemnes furniture – especially when dealing with heavy dirt and stains. I own several pieces from the HEMNES series, which are made of solid pine wood with a lacquer finish. Some areas have become deeply stained or stubbornly dirty due to food residues, grease, and dust. I have already tried gently cleaning with mild detergents like dish soap and a damp cloth, but unfortunately, without success. Therefore, I am interested in which cleaning methods or products you would recommend to remove this type of persistent dirt thoroughly without damaging the wood or the lacquer. Are there any special products that work particularly well or home remedies that can be used? Any advice regarding techniques, procedures, and things to definitely avoid would also be very helpful. Thank you in advance for your tips!

Hello Trahasan6,

First of all, great job on your very clearly formulated and precise question! That definitely makes it easier to provide a targeted answer.

When cleaning Ikea HEMNES furniture, which has a clear lacquer finish on pine wood, you should be very gentle to avoid damaging the surface. For light dirt, usually a soft, slightly damp cloth with some mild neutral detergent is sufficient. For tougher stains, here is my little cleaning tutorial:

- Always start with a soft microfiber cloth, as it won’t scratch.
- For baked-on food residues, I like to soak the area first with some lukewarm water and a splash of vinegar essence. Vinegar often helps to break down grease but does not damage lacquer if properly diluted and quickly rinsed off.
- After that, gently treat the spot with a so-called “eraser sponge” (a special melamine sponge). Be sure to test it first on an inconspicuous area, as the sponge can dull the lacquer if used with strong pressure.
- Always wipe thoroughly afterward with a damp cloth to remove any residue.
- Finally, I recommend applying a special furniture oil or wood care product (suitable for lacquered surfaces) to preserve the shine and protection.

Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals like ammonia, bleach, or rough scrubbing pads, which can damage the lacquer.

If you encounter very stubborn stains, feel free to ask again, and we can look for more specific solutions.

Best regards!

Hello Trahasan6,

I would like to go into more detail about the techniques and nuances of cleaning Ikea HEMNES furniture, as many users have different ideas of what “heavy soiling” means and end up using the wrong cleaning agents, which causes damage to the surface.

The HEMNES furniture series is, as rotofra already mentioned, sealed with a clear protective lacquer that protects the wood against moisture and dirt. However, this protective lacquer is particularly vulnerable to damage when exposed to intense mechanical or chemical stress.

I highly recommend the following procedure to avoid any damage as much as possible:

- Assess the soiling: Is it just surface dirt (dust, fingerprints), or are there greasy/rancid residues or even paint stains?
- Preparation: Test on an inconspicuous spot, for example the inside of a drawer.
- Cleaning steps:
- For grease and oils: I use a mixture of lukewarm water and a few drops of dish soap, with the cloth only lightly dampened (not wet!). Cleaning should always be done with minimal moisture to prevent swelling of the wood grain.
- Melamine sponges (magic erasers) are only suitable to a limited extent, as they are abrasive. I use them very carefully and with light pressure.
- For stains such as red wine or coffee residues, I occasionally use a paste made of baking soda and water. This is mildly abrasive, gently removes stains, and if applied correctly, does not scratch.
- Aftercare: Treating with wax or furniture oil, for example beeswax polish or special lacquer care products, increases the surface’s durability and restores its shine.

Additionally, for very stubborn, dried-in stains, it is often advisable to sand the furniture parts down and refinish them if the surface is already significantly worn.

One more question: What type of soiling do you have exactly? Are the stains greasy, sticky, discolored, or dried-in? This greatly influences the choice of the appropriate cleaning method.

I hope this helps you for now!

That’s a really important question because the approach varies significantly depending on the age and type of the stains.

Regarding the cleaning of HEMNES furniture with heavily visible stains, I would like to add the following:

- Generally, gentle cleaning is always better than vigorous scrubbing, which can quickly cause loss of sheen.
- For simple, fresh grease residues, slightly dampened microfiber cloths with some gall soap are recommended, as it is particularly effective at dissolving grease while being gentle.
- For dried-on food stains, you can try moistening the stain with a damp cloth and some lukewarm soapy water, then let it sit for a few minutes.
- After that, carefully try to loosen the dirt with a plastic scraper (for example, a simple plastic ruler) to avoid scratching the surface.

Be cautious with vinegar essence, as undiluted or high concentrations can damage the finish. It is better to use it very carefully and only in small amounts.

I hope these tips help you with your next steps. Good luck!
