Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install an IKEA Metod kitchen island that offers both an integrated work area and a dining space. My main question is how to best combine the modules to build a functional and stable island that provides enough storage while remaining visually appealing. It is also important to me to incorporate work surfaces that can be used from both sides, as well as a comfortable seating height for the dining area. Does anyone have experience with planning and implementing kitchen islands using the Metod system? Are there any special considerations when assembling it or when selecting the cabinet fronts, countertops, and fasteners that should be kept in mind?

Interesting how often people build the Metod island but hardly visually separate the seating and working areas.I agree with you. That’s exactly why I’m asking for proven concepts on how to implement this in practice. I especially want to design the combination of storage, work surface, and dining area as efficiently as possible. Which materials and height differences have you specifically used to visually and functionally separate these areas?
I recommend planning a raised countertop for the seating area, about 15 cm (6 inches) higher than the standard countertop depth. This creates a small bar that is visually and functionally separated from the main working area. Additionally, using contrasting colors for cabinet fronts or countertops can help delineate different zones. Sturdy brackets should be used during installation to securely support the overhanging surfaces. The typical seating height for bar stools is around 105 cm (41 inches), which is ergonomically optimal.

Which materials and height differences have you specifically used to visually and functionally separate these areas?Regarding materials, IKEA offers various countertops for Metod in laminate, wood, and stone look, which can be combined effectively for contrast. Height differences are best achieved by installing a second countertop supported on brackets. Alternatively, a solid wooden strip can be attached to provide a visual transition. Pay attention to load capacity: screws and brackets must withstand twice the load from both seating and workspace.
