KeonusHello everyone, I am currently planning to install an IKEA Metod kitchen island that offers both an integrated work area and a dining space. My main question is how to best combine the modules to build a functional and stable island that provides enough storage while remaining visually appealing. It is also important to me to incorporate work surfaces that can be used from both sides, as well as a comfortable seating height for the dining area. Does anyone have experience with planning and implementing kitchen islands using the Metod system? Are there any special considerations when assembling it or when selecting the cabinet fronts, countertops, and fasteners that should be kept in mind?
For a kitchen island with both a work and dining area, simply place several Metod base cabinets side by side and connect them with a suitable countertop. You can create the seating area with a slightly higher bar or an overhanging section of the countertop. Make sure to use sturdy mounting brackets.
When planning Ikea Metod kitchen islands with integrated dining and work areas, precise planning of the modules regarding space requirements and functionality is important. The typical depth of Metod base cabinets is 60 cm (24 inches), while for island designs, the countertop should be at least 90 cm (35 inches) wide to comfortably accommodate both workspace and seating area. The seating height is often around 105 cm (41 inches), while the work surface is approximately 90 cm (35 inches) high. It is advisable to install additional support for overhanging countertops in this area. Cabinet fronts and countertops should be color-coordinated accordingly. For fastening, the original Ikea connectors are sufficient, but it is best to supplement them with additional angle brackets for stability.
The work and dining areas need to vary in height. The countertop should be at 90 cm (35 inches), and the seating area at about 105 cm (41 inches) – otherwise, sitting becomes uncomfortable. Simply use one module for base cabinets with shelves and a taller element for the seating area.
It’s interesting how often people build the Metod island but hardly separate the seating and work areas visually. That’s actually the key: creating a clear visual boundary between the kitchen and dining area. Instead of keeping everything at the same height, you should also consider different heights and materials. Just because Ikea Metod is standardized doesn’t mean you can’t experiment.
