Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island that will serve not only as a workspace but also include an integrated dining area. Specifically, I am wondering which cabinet units and fronts are best suited to make the island stable while also providing a comfortable seating height for the dining area. How can the transition between the kitchen work surface and the dining space be designed both visually and functionally in a sensible way?

I am also interested in any special installation tips when combining the typical Metod cabinets with an overhanging countertop section—especially regarding fastening and load-bearing capacity. Are there particular panels or reinforcements you would recommend?

I would really appreciate step-by-step experiences or advice on what to pay attention to from the start to prevent the project from becoming frustrating.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Sigla54,

With the dimensions and seating specifications you mentioned, it basically fits very well. The idea of equipping the dining area at the island with an overhang of about 60 cm (24 inches) is feasible.

Important points:
- The countertop for the dining area should be around 72–74 cm (28–29 inches) high to sit comfortably on dining chairs.
- Standard Metod cabinets are about 80–91 cm (31–36 inches) high including the countertop, so for the dining area you can either install a separate, lower countertop or adjust the cabinets underneath accordingly.
- Some people build a shallower substructure for the dining area or use plinth heights to lower the countertop.
- When attaching and ensuring stability, make sure to not only screw into the cabinets but also reinforce with wooden battens or metal brackets—especially for overhangs.

If you like, I can also provide two simple examples of how other users have implemented this.

Some important technical tips for the construction:

- Load capacity check: The IKEA Metod cabinets support a load of about 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf; the tabletop should be properly supported accordingly.
- Connection: Use appropriate fastening screws for the cabinet to create a continuous, torsion-resistant platform.
- Worktop material: For the dining area, HPL laminate or solid wood tops with at least 38 mm (1.5 inches) thickness are recommended. Cheaper particleboard panels may sag.
- Distance from seating position: The tabletop should overhang at least 60 cm (24 inches) to provide sufficient legroom.

Conclusion: A clean assembly with sturdy brackets and, if necessary, additional metal braces is essential, as standard Metod cabinets are not designed for overhanging tabletops.

Implementation is possible with IKEA systems, but for the dining island, a combination of system furniture and custom-built elements is advisable.

If you have any questions about materials or fastening techniques, feel free to ask.

I am actually not planning bar stools but a regular dining area with a seat height of around 48-50 cm (19-20 inches). The countertop should either be lowered accordingly or installed separately at a different height.

This is an important point. There are basically two approaches:

- Separate construction: Build the island at a standard height and attach a separate, lower surface for the dining area, for example using an intermediate frame.
- Adjusted base height: You can modify the cabinets of the dining area so that the entire surface is lower, but this needs to harmonize with the rest of the kitchen.

I have had good experiences with the first option. Make sure the connection between both surfaces is stable to avoid any tipping or wobbling. Also, the choice of the countertop material is crucial for both appearance and durability.

A personal recommendation: For the dining area, use a solid wood slab or thick laminate panels – these look high-quality and are long-lasting.
