Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island that will serve not only as a workspace but also include an integrated dining area. Specifically, I am wondering which cabinet units and fronts are best suited to make the island stable while also providing a comfortable seating height for the dining area. How can the transition between the kitchen work surface and the dining space be designed both visually and functionally in a sensible way?

I am also interested in any special installation tips when combining the typical Metod cabinets with an overhanging countertop section—especially regarding fastening and load-bearing capacity. Are there particular panels or reinforcements you would recommend?

I would really appreciate step-by-step experiences or advice on what to pay attention to from the start to prevent the project from becoming frustrating.

Thanks in advance!

To make your IKEA Metod kitchen island with dining area stable, it is recommended to use the 80cm (31½ inches) wide carcasses with integrated joining plates. For the dining area, you can use a sturdy table leg construction or attach metal table legs to the tabletop. The tabletop should be at least 3.8cm (1½ inches) thick to provide adequate support. Make sure to secure the tabletop to the carcasses with strong screws to withstand the load from sitting.

I would like to go into more detail about your project to provide you with the most accurate assistance possible.

First, in your planning, keep in mind that despite their modular design, Metod cabinets often need additional reinforcement for an island with a dining area, as the load from sitting and the potentially overhanging tabletop is higher than with standard kitchen cabinets.

The following points are important:
- Use 80 cm (31.5 inches) deep cabinets for better stability.
- For the dining area version, you can use an overhanging countertop that is at least 40 mm (1.6 inches) thick; 60 mm (2.4 inches) is better if you build a wooden support structure behind it.
- One option is to attach the tabletop to the cabinets using metal brackets. These should be secured with heavy-duty anchors or fixed through the back panel.
- If seating is planned, also install sturdy legs or a closed panel at the end of the island to prevent the countertop from sagging.
- To achieve a clean visual transition between the cooking area and the dining section, narrow trims or strips with the same material thickness and color as the cabinet fronts are recommended.

Finally, one question: What seating height are you planning—bar stools with around 100 cm (39 inches) worktop height, or regular dining chairs at about 74-76 cm (29-30 inches)? This will significantly affect the countertop height.

That sounds really exciting, an IKEA Metod island with an integrated dining area! It’s a great opportunity to get creative! 😊

Here’s how I did it: I arranged the standard 80cm (32 inches) deep base cabinets so that on the side where the dining area is, I mounted a sturdy tabletop that extends about 30cm (12 inches) beyond the cabinets.

It’s really important to properly support the tabletop – I added a solid table leg for extra support because the cabinet frames alone wouldn’t be able to handle the load from the chairs.

My tip: definitely use the thicker IKEA countertops (they are much more stable) and attach the tabletop to the cabinet frames with brackets to make everything secure.

It’s a lot of fun and really adds character to the kitchen! Good luck, you can do this!

Hello Sigla54,

I would like to address the mechanical aspects that must be considered when building a Metod kitchen island with an integrated dining area.

1. Cabinet Selection and Reinforcement:
- Use only Metod cabinets with a depth of 80 cm (31.5 inches) for the base, as they provide the necessary stability.
- If possible, add additional reinforcements made of wooden slats or metal profiles inside the cabinet structure, especially where the countertop overhangs.

2. Securing the Countertop:
- The countertop should be at least 38 mm (1.5 inches) thick if made of solid wood or high-quality laminate panels.
- The connection to the cabinet structure should ideally be made with sturdy metal brackets securely screwed in to prevent any tilting or movement.

3. Mechanics for the Dining Area:
- Since point loads from people sitting apply on the seating surface, additional support (table leg, closed panel) is recommended to prevent the countertop from bending.

4. Height Planning:
- The combination of standard kitchen height (approximately 91 cm (36 inches) including the countertop) and dining area height depends on the type of seating. For bar stools, a countertop height of at least 105-110 cm (41-43 inches) is recommended; for a normal dining setup, 75-80 cm (29.5-31.5 inches) is suitable.

I would also like to know if you plan to include a suitable seating solution and how large your island will be overall. These parameters slightly change the recommended measures.

Thanks for the detailed post!
I’m actually not planning bar stools but prefer a standard dining area with a seat height around 48-50 cm (19-20 inches). The countertop will either be lowered accordingly or installed separately at a different height.

I’d also like to know if you’re including a suitable seating solution in your plans and how large your island will be overall. These aspects slightly change the recommended dimensions.

The island will be approximately 2.20 m (7 ft 3 in) long and 1.00 m (3 ft 3 in) wide. The dining area will cantilever about 60 cm (24 inches) over the width on one side to allow 2-3 seating spaces. The seats are classic dining chairs without height adjustment.

I’m curious if this can be achieved with IKEA Metod without needing too much custom work.
