SANNON58Hello everyone, I am planning to install new Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets in our house, but I want to build them in a way that is completely child-friendly and safe. Specifically, I am wondering what measures can be taken during assembly and installation to minimize the risk of injuries for small children. For example, I am considering secure fastenings, rounded edges, or child safety locks on doors and drawers. Perhaps someone here has practical tips or specific accessories that I should definitely use? It would also be helpful to know the best way to secure the cabinets to the wall to prevent them from tipping over if children pull or climb on them. Thank you in advance for your advice!
Wall mounting is essential; make sure to secure the cabinets firmly using appropriate anchors and brackets. Installing child safety locks on doors that can be opened with one hand is a good idea. Additionally, you can protect the edges with edge guard tape, which significantly reduces injuries from bumps.
Exactly, very important questions! 🙂 I would also recommend using drawers with soft-close fittings – this way, children can't get their fingers pinched. With our Metod cabinets, we added extra metal plates to the back panels to increase stability – it just feels safer when little climbers are active! And very important: double-check all screws and brackets to ensure they are really tight; regularly tightening them makes all the difference.

Using soft-close drawer fittings prevents children from getting their fingers caught. Good tip, I had been thinking about retrofitting soft-close myself. How easy is that with Metod cabinets?
I’m also considering whether additional edge or corner protectors can be installed without negatively affecting the appearance. In living areas, these safety measures are often overlooked, but my priority is clearly the safety of the little ones.
