PRAMEO7Hello everyone, I am currently planning to build an Ikea Metod kitchen island with an integrated seating area and have a few questions to help ensure the project goes smoothly. I am particularly interested in how to combine the different Metod base cabinets in a way that provides enough storage space while making the seating area both functional and stable. I would also like to know which countertop is best suited for this, as it will be used both as a dining and a work surface. Does anyone have details on the proper way to attach the bench to the kitchen island and how to adjust the height appropriately for sitting and standing? I would also appreciate tips regarding water and electrical connections for a freestanding island, as I am hoping to learn about any special considerations I might have overlooked. Thanks in advance for your help!
Hey PRAMEO7, great idea with the kitchen island and seating area! 😎 Basically, when planning, you should use standardized Metod cabinets – they are highly compatible. For the seating surface, tall cabinets with built-in seating height are recommended, or at least base cabinets that you can raise to seating height with an appropriate countertop. Birch or oak countertops are often durable, look fantastic, and are easy to work with. Important: plan the seating surface a few centimeters lower than standard countertop height, about 60–65 cm (24–26 inches) tall is ideal for sitting. Attachment is usually done via drawer fronts, which basically sit on a modified base unit. And regarding water and electricity – make sure to plan this before installation! Having plumbing or electrical connections near the island is invaluable, otherwise it quickly becomes complicated. Good luck, it will definitely be a showpiece! ✌️
As a supplement: When combining Ikea Metod cabinets, you can easily use different base cabinet widths since the cabinets are modular. For a seating area, a countertop depth of at least 60 cm (24 inches) is recommended to provide enough legroom. The seat height should be around 60 cm (24 inches), which is about 10 cm (4 inches) lower than the standard countertop height (approximately 91 cm (36 inches)). For securely attaching the bench seating to the kitchen island, metal angle brackets are ideal. When planning water and electrical connections, keep in mind that freestanding islands can only be retrofitted with the appropriate channel installations or ceiling feeds. This should definitely be clarified with a plumber or electrician before installation.
Hello PRAMEO7, I also installed a kitchen island with a seating area and can tell you: Take your time planning the seat height. I made mine too low, and it can be quite uncomfortable to sit there. Also, my advice is to use clamp stools instead of a fixed built-in bench, as it’s more flexible. Regarding installation: The Metod modules are very sturdy, but make sure to tighten the screws well in the seating area because the constant load differs from that of pure storage. Good luck!
For the seating area, simply use Metod base cabinets 60cm (24 inches) high and cut the countertop to seating height. The bench can be supported with battens to ensure stability. The countertop can be wood or stone, depending on your budget. Install electrical wiring in the floor, and it’s best to route water connections through the floor as well.
