Soschahi6430 Dec 2022 09:47Hello everyone, I am planning to build a bench with storage in my twins’ bedroom. I want to use Ikea Besta as the base because I find the units very flexible and easy to integrate into the room. My main question is: What is the best way to convert Ikea Besta into a stable and child-friendly bench with enough storage space for a kids' room? I imagine adding a padded seat on top and using the cabinets underneath for storage, but I am unsure how to do this properly so it is durable and safe. Has anyone had experience with a similar project, especially regarding components, attachment methods, padding, and potential pitfalls? Thank you in advance!
Hello Soschahi64, your idea to convert Ikea BESTA into a bench with storage is very versatile but requires careful planning. I have completed similar projects several times and can offer some tips:
- First, you should match the size of the BESTA modules precisely to the planned seat height and depth. A seat height of about 40-45 cm (16-18 inches) is ergonomically suitable for children.
- To keep the bench stable, I recommend screwing the modules together and mounting them on a sturdy base plate. This helps prevent tipping.
- For the seating surface, a thick cushion is suitable, which you can either place loosely on top or attach with hook-and-loop fasteners. Make sure the cover is durable and easy to wipe clean.
- You will have storage space through the cabinet compartments; doors or drawers are ideal to keep things organized and store small items.
- Make sure to childproof the edges by adding edge protection as needed.
I am curious which BESTA size you have in mind and whether you have already chosen the padding material? This way I can give you more targeted advice.
If you want to save effort, plan the screwing of the modules carefully, because the side panels alone are not enough for the required stability. I have had good experiences with small corner braces inside, which are not visible but provide extra strength.

I would recommend screwing the BESTA elements onto a sturdy baseboard and using a 3-5 cm (1.2-2 inches) thick foam panel with a water-repellent cover as the seating surface. Ensure a secure connection with angle screws and install spacers to prevent obstruction of the storage space.

A thick cushion works well for the seat, which you can either lay loosely on top or attach with Velcro straps. Make sure the cover is durable and easy to wipe clean.Oh yes, that’s exactly how I did it, and it works great! At first, I was worried the cushions would slip, but with Velcro everything stays firmly in place. The kids love sitting on it!
But one thing you shouldn’t forget: the height of the bench is really important! I built it a bit higher and screwed simple legs under the BESTA units. This way, the kids have an easier step up, and there’s also storage space underneath.
Don’t stress about it, it will turn out great. Especially in the kids’ room, a multifunctional bench is a huge advantage. If you need any tips on where to get cushions, just ask! 🙂
