Good morning everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of assembling my new IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and want to avoid common mistakes that can unnecessarily complicate the process or later affect the stability.
I am particularly interested in any critical points or pitfalls related to the Hemnes—ranging from following the instructions, ensuring the parts fit correctly, to properly tightening the screws.
Do you have any experience or proven tips on how to recognize and avoid frequent errors beforehand, so the assembly goes as smoothly as possible and the wardrobe stands firm?
Thank you in advance for any helpful feedback!

I’m particularly interested in which critical points or pitfalls there are with the Hemnes – starting from dealing with the instructions, the fit of the parts, to the correct tightening of the screws.A few more technical details about correctly tightening the screws: Hemnes primarily uses wood screws, which should be tightened with a torque that does not overstrain the material. Over-tightening can cause the wood to swell or the screw holes to become stripped.
I recommend using a cordless drill with adjustable torque settings if possible, and tightening on a medium setting. If you’re working without torque control, it’s better to tighten the screws twice carefully rather than forcing them.

Screw in loosely first, then tighten all screws evenly in the endThat really is the key to stability and matches exactly what I wanted to share from a technical perspective.
I’ll ask again: What about your tools? Do you have a suitable cordless drill or are you working manually? This can greatly affect how securely the screws hold.
Hello Ziyadan,
briefly and to the point:
- Start by positioning the screws without tightening to avoid misalignment.
- Follow the assembly instructions step by step.
- If something sticks, do not use force; look for mistakes.
This usually prevents the most common errors with the Hemnes.

Prepare small containers or bowls in advance for the screws.I did the same during the last assembly – very practical!
I also recommend checking the wooden panels for any damage before construction. A small defect can worsen over time.
A tip: Make sure to install the back wall last; otherwise, the parts may not stand straight.
