Good morning everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of assembling my new IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and want to avoid common mistakes that can unnecessarily complicate the process or later affect the stability.

I am particularly interested in any critical points or pitfalls related to the Hemnes—ranging from following the instructions, ensuring the parts fit correctly, to properly tightening the screws.

Do you have any experience or proven tips on how to recognize and avoid frequent errors beforehand, so the assembly goes as smoothly as possible and the wardrobe stands firm?

Thank you in advance for any helpful feedback!

Hello Ziyadan,

Your concern is completely understandable. The Hemnes system is often underestimated, even though it is relatively sturdy, it also contains some rough approximations that can lead to errors.

From my experience, you should follow these steps:

- Preparation of parts: Lay out all parts in an organized way and check against the packing list to ensure all screws, dowels, and wooden parts are complete. Small components are often missing or screws delivered might be mixed up and overlooked.

- Read the instructions carefully: The Hemnes manual may seem simple in the first steps, but errors often occur during the assembly of the back panels and drawer runners. Pay attention to the screw direction – overtightening or incorrect insertion can split the wood.

- Check drilled holes: Sometimes the pre-drilled holes are not precise. Light sanding or careful correction with a thin drill bit can help ensure screws do not become misaligned or stripped.

- Follow the order: Assembly usually requires a strict sequence; otherwise, parts may not fit together properly in the end. For Hemnes, for example, start with the side panels, then the back panels, and finally assemble the drawers.

- Screw quality: Never use excessive force on wood screws, as the heads may slip or damage the wood.

- Work on soft surfaces: It is best to assemble on a carpet or cardboard to avoid minor scratches at the beginning.

I would be interested to know if you are assembling the cabinet alone and what your prior DIY experience is, especially with cordless drills or hand tools. That way, I can provide more targeted advice.

Hello Ziyadan,

I can definitely confirm PIN66’s assessment. I would just add that a common cause of problems is people trying to rush certain steps or only going through the instructions superficially and then “putting it together somehow.”

Patience is especially key with IKEA furniture. With the Hemnes series in particular, it’s worth taking the time before assembly to get a complete overview of the process.

Some tips:
- Screw in bolts loosely at first, then tighten them all evenly at the end
- Follow the assembly order strictly
- If something doesn’t fit right away, avoid forcing it and double-check that all parts are correctly positioned
- Really study the instructions carefully, as there are often details that can be missed at first glance

Personally, I keep the instructions next to my workspace weighted down with something sturdy (like a book) so they don’t move around while I’m flipping through them.

Good luck with your assembly!

Hey Ziyadan!

So, I’ve already assembled the Hemnes three times (and taken it apart again 😂), and all I can say is: take your time and stay relaxed!

What I’ve learned:
- Prepare small containers or bowls for the screws in advance. Nothing’s worse than having an important screw roll across the floor and not being able to find it.
- Be careful with the small back panels; they’re often very thin and can be easily damaged if you’re not paying attention.
- And: if you notice that something doesn’t fit, double-check before using force – otherwise, you might get scratches or cracking sounds, which are not a good sign 😅

Take breaks in between, that helps to avoid getting rushed!

Have fun with the assembly and remember to grab a coffee for motivation ☕️

Hello,

When assembling the Hemnes:
- First, insert screws lightly without tightening them fully.
- Align the parts precisely; otherwise, things won't fit correctly later.
- Attach the back panel only at the end.

This helps to avoid the most common mistakes.

Hello everyone and hello Ziyadan!

I really want to encourage you: you can do this! 😊 The Hemnes is very sturdy, even if it sometimes requires a bit of adjustment.

The important thing is to take your time. I remember at the beginning I mixed up some screws too – just stay calm and double-check which one fits.

And if you get stuck: don’t panic, that’s completely normal. Often it helps to take another look at the parts from a different angle or take a short break.

Good luck and enjoy your Hemnes later! Let me know if you need any more tips! 👍
