Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to remodel my kitchen and want to design IKEA Metod cabinets to be as barrier-free as possible. My specific question is: What is the best way to build IKEA Metod cabinets for accessible kitchens that provide sufficient storage while improving accessibility, especially for people with physical disabilities?

I am particularly interested in the planned height of the base cabinets, the integration of pull-outs or shelves that are easier to reach, and whether additional elements or modifications from IKEA or third-party providers are useful to simplify use.

Perhaps someone has experience adapting the Metod series for accessible or age-friendly kitchens and can offer tips on how to best plan the installation and selection of components.

I look forward to expert and practical advice, thank you in advance!

For barrier-free kitchens with IKEA Metod, you should install the cabinets higher than usual, at about 90 to 95 cm (35 to 37 inches) working height.

Use front drawers instead of doors, as they are easier to access and provide better visibility.

Installing pull-out cabinets with roller-mounted drawers for easy operation is worthwhile.

Returning to tubomu’s request to integrate IKEA Metod kitchens into accessible design, the following points should be considered:

- Work height: The standard height of 91cm (36 inches) may be too low or too high for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments. An adjustment between 85 and 95cm (33 to 37 inches) should be made depending on the user’s needs.

- Base cabinets: Instead of traditional internal shelves, continuous pull-out drawers with full-extension slides are recommended for better access. Front drawers should have easy-to-grip handles, such as handle rails.

- Tall cabinets: For accessible use, tall cabinets with internal lifts or rotating shelves (carousels) are advantageous to reach deep compartments more easily.

- Clear planning of door opening paths is crucial: Doors with hold-open mechanisms or sliding doors help prevent collisions and simplify use.

- Electrical aids or motors can be used for tall cabinets, for example automated flaps.

- During installation, pay attention to the maximum load capacity of fittings, especially when heavy drawers and motorized components are integrated.

- The modularity of the Metod system allows for adaptations, though some solutions from third-party providers may be necessary, such as lifting systems or ergonomic handles.

I am happy to provide more detailed recommendations for specific components if additional information about the user profile is available.

That is absolutely correct. Additionally, I would suggest paying attention to the following details when building the kitchen unit:

- Avoid cabinets that are too deep, as they are difficult to access. Instead, opt for shallower, height-adjustable cabinets.

- Choose smoothly operating drawer slides, ideally with soft-close features, to prevent unnecessary noise.

- Installing shelves and systems like pull-out organizers that can be easily extended saves bending and reaching.

- Consider users’ arm reach and grip range, for example wheelchair users, to place important cabinets and appliances within an optimal range.

- If possible, combine the workspace with height-adjustable countertops to create flexibility.

During installation, make sure to securely fasten and precisely align all elements to ensure ease of use later on.
