Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of assembling an Ikea Besta furniture unit in a way that allows me to integrate adjustable compartments. My goal is to create a highly flexible interior layout so that the shelf heights can be adapted as needed—whether for larger compartments to store binders or smaller ones for books and decorations.
I am particularly interested in how to best combine the original BESTA components, which accessories are suitable (such as additional shelves, dividers, or special brackets), and if anyone has tips regarding stability when frequently rearranging the setup.
I would appreciate practical advice, ideally from people who have built a similar system with adjustable compartments themselves. How do you manage the flexibility? Do you use your own modifications, or is it feasible to do so with just the IKEA parts as they are?
Thanks in advance!

Here are some facts and recommendations on this topic:
- The BESTA system comes standard with perforated side panels, allowing shelves to be adjusted in 32mm (1.25 inch) increments.
- For maximum flexibility, use shelves that are compatible with these perforation patterns. IKEA offers both wooden and glass shelves, depending on the desired look.
- When rearranging or modifying the compartments, always make sure not to exceed the load capacity of the shelves (approximately 25 kg (55 lbs) per shelf).
- For greater stability, you can fully fasten back panels and anchor the furniture to the floor or wall; this is especially important if you frequently rearrange the unit to reduce the risk of tipping.
If you want to create your own dividers or hybrid solutions, standard particleboard cut to IKEA’s dimensions is recommended. However, this requires some DIY skills.
In summary: The key is to use the existing perforated side panels combined with suitable shelves according to IKEA standards.

I would appreciate practical advice, ideally from people who have built a system with adjustable shelves themselves. That’s a good point because the original IKEA instructions don’t really cover variable shelf heights in combination with long-term stability.
At this point, I wonder whether you plan to rearrange the shelves occasionally or if you need a permanently modular solution.
If frequent reconfiguration is planned, there is a risk of material fatigue and loose dowels.
In that case, I would recommend reinforced dowels or additional side guide rails to ensure stability not only statically but also dynamically.
Also, the back panel should not just act as stiffening but remain accessible in case you need to adjust the dowels.
Do you already have an installation setup where this is realistically possible?
A few months ago, I also assembled a BESTA system with adjustable compartments, and I can say it’s definitely worth taking the time to plan it properly.
For me, it was important not only to remain flexible but also to achieve a clean overall look. That’s why I chose wooden shelves and combined them with the Ikea pegboard panels. At first, I was unsure about the stability, especially since I wanted to rearrange the compartments often.
However, by regularly tightening the dowels and securing the frame to the wall, the furniture has become very stable. Additionally, I arranged the compartments so that most of the load is evenly distributed.
One tip: plan ahead how you want to use the compartments. Especially if you need different heights, it helps to position the shelves in advance, so you can make changes more quickly later on.
I hope this gives you some confidence! It really feels great to have your own customized solution.
