Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets in my new apartment, but I have the problem that the floor is uneven. Specifically, there is a height difference of about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) along the length of the cabinet run on one side. My question is: How do you best align the Metod cabinets when the floor is uneven?

I am particularly interested in:
- What options are there to level and stabilize the cabinets on an uneven surface?
- Are there specific types of feet that are especially suitable, or recommendations for using leveling materials?
- Should the floor be leveled first, or can adjustments be made directly on the cabinets?

I want to avoid doors not closing properly or the countertop being crooked. I would appreciate any tips and experiences, especially regarding Metod!

Hey, this is really more about patience than pure furniture skills – almost like a little dance with the floor. 😄 Metod cabinets come with adjustable feet, which can compensate for quite a bit of height difference.

I’d recommend starting by adjusting the feet so the cabinets don’t wobble. If the unevenness is more than 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 inches), it might help to use laminate or vinyl strips as shims underneath.

Very important: always build starting from the side closest to the wall, aligning that side precisely and using a spirit level. Keep in mind that the countertop should rest at multiple points, otherwise you’ll get uneven edges.

And if the doors don’t close properly, a little readjustment of the hinges usually helps – they are adjustable too. Good luck with your build! 🍀

Adjust the feet, level the thresholds with wooden wedges, and align the countertop last. Start simply at the wall and check with a spirit level.

The floor unevenness of 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) is definitely challenging, but manageable with Metod cabinets. The key is the principle of temporary stabilization during assembly:

- Adjust the adjustable feet precisely to compensate for the greatest height difference.
- Use small wooden or plastic wedges as permanent shimming elements if the feet alone are not enough.
- Always install the countertop last and check it carefully with a large spirit level.

I would not recommend leveling the entire floor surface, as this is usually labor-intensive and can damage the existing surface. The cabinets are designed to handle minor unevenness, so make full use of their adjustability.

Additionally, I suggest placing all cabinets loosely first and aligning them before screwing them together. This allows for individual fine-tuning.

Overall a good summary, I’ll add some precise recommendations:

- IKEA Metod feet allow height adjustment of about 10 cm (4 inches); use this fully to compensate for uneven floors.
- Wooden shims provide a stable and durable leveling solution; make sure to secure them properly so they don’t slip.
- If floor unevenness exceeds 2 cm (0.8 inches), it might be worthwhile to partially level the floor using plywood sheets under the cabinets.
- Avoid installing the countertop before the base is perfectly level, as this can cause stress and damage.

Additionally, I recommend accurate measurements before assembly to adjust the feet to the exact height. This prevents rework and on-the-fly adjustments. The correct sequence is: set the feet, place and level the cabinets, secure them, then install the countertop.
