Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Billy shelf from IKEA, but unfortunately the doors are not properly aligned and visibly hang crooked. My question to the community is: How do you correctly adjust crooked Billy doors?

Specifically, which screws need to be adjusted exactly where to potentially change the height, the gap to the cabinet, and the alignment of the doors so that they close flush and even? Are there any particular tricks or special tools required for this?

The doors on my shelf can be moved, but I’m not sure in which order I should make the adjustments. I’m also interested to know if the door hinges offer more adjustment flexibility when installed than one might expect.

Thank you very much for any helpful tips and advice!

Basically, BILLY doors can be adjusted using the two screws on the hinges: one screw controls the horizontal alignment, the other controls the vertical height. While you can work on the hinges with the door open, you should start by adjusting the vertical alignment.

The procedure is as follows:
1. Open the door completely.
2. Slightly loosen the upper mounting screws to adjust the height and align the door.
3. Tighten the screws again.
4. Then adjust the horizontal position by turning the corresponding screw slightly until the door sits flush.

Important: For the horizontal tilt adjustment, a screwdriver with a small head is helpful to reach into the hinges. Tools like a small Phillips screwdriver should be sufficient. Note that after each screw adjustment, the door should be opened and closed several times to check the effect. Avoid overtightening to prevent damage.

First, adjust the vertical alignment

This is a very useful tip. Additionally, you should check whether the BILLY cabinet sides themselves are perfectly vertical. A tilted cabinet can worsen the problem. Therefore, I recommend slightly adjusting the furniture before aligning the doors, for example, using a spirit level or by adjusting the floor leveling feet.

One more note: Sometimes the hinges are set quite tight from the factory. If the doors are very hard to move, it makes sense to check the hinge springs, as they affect the door tension.

That you should first align the carcass precisely
That’s a good point I hadn’t considered yet. My shelving unit is probably not completely level because the floor is uneven in places.

Adjust vertically first, then horizontally
I have always done it the other way around so far, but I will definitely try it that way.

For adjusting the floor leveling screws: Are regular Phillips screwdrivers sufficient, or do you need special tools?

Also, I’m curious if the hinges need to be completely removed to adjust them, or if it’s enough to keep the doors open and work from the outside?

Floor leveling screws can be adjusted using a regular screwdriver.
Hinges do not need to be removed; just open the doors and adjust the screws.
First align the height, then adjust sideways. That’s all it takes.

You don’t need to remove the hinges

That is correct, but in my experience, many people overestimate the adjustment options because the hinge in the BILLY series defines a certain standard position.

Additionally, it’s worth considering whether the door is really always the cause of misalignment. Sometimes the issue lies with the cabinet itself, which can be slightly warped due to stress or inaccurate positioning.

One suggestion: if your doors remain misaligned despite correct adjustment, check whether the back panel of the shelving unit is properly secured. It stabilizes the entire structure.

If possible, slight readjustment of the back panel braces or adding corner brackets can help improve stability and thus also the door alignment.
