Over the past few weeks, I have been regularly using the IKEA Brimnes cabinet doors and noticed that operating the doors can sometimes feel rather stiff and awkward. Therefore, I would like to use this thread to specifically ask: How can the operation of IKEA BRIMNES doors be improved, especially regarding smooth and easy opening and closing, noise reduction, and hinge stability? I am interested in suggestions that can be implemented either by modifying the furniture itself, simple adjustments, or installing additional components. Who has had similar experiences or already found effective solutions? What tips or tricks do you know to prevent the doors from squeaking, sticking, or generally improving their usability?

I can fully understand how frustrating stiff and hard-to-move doors can be. The issue with BRIMNES doors is often that the hinges are set too tightly or that the door itself wasn’t aligned precisely.

From my own experience, it helps to slightly loosen the screws of the hinges and then realign the doors. Especially if a door squeaks when closing, the plastic dampers are often not positioned correctly or are slightly dirty.

I would definitely recommend using small silicone oil sprays that can be applied to the hinges to reduce friction without making the doors noisy or rattling after treatment. Another option is to attach small felt or foam strips at the door contact points on the inside to dampen sounds.

I was initially unsure whether this would provide a lasting solution, but in my case, the doors became noticeably smoother and quieter afterward. If anyone has found a better solution, I would appreciate additional input.

For better operation, simply clean the hinges with a cloth and spray them with WD-40. After that, you can readjust the doors at the screws so they do not wobble or catch. If noise persists, use foam rubber.

I am taking the time to respond to this question because I am very familiar with the issue of IKEA BRIMNES doors and have worked many times to significantly improve their operation.

First of all, the main reason for stiff or noisy doors is usually the connection between the hinge and the door panel, often caused by poor adjustment and lack of lubrication.

Important points:
- The hinges should be completely disassembled and cleaned to remove dust and accumulated deposits. The plastic dampers can be carefully removed and cleaned.
- Afterwards, I use a special silicone spray because it is less sticky than oil and attracts less dust. Apply a thin layer on the hinge pins and moving parts.

The alignment of the doors must also be done with millimeter precision. This is possible with the adjustable screws – I recommend the following procedure:
- First, slightly loosen all screws
- Then carefully and evenly position the doors so they close flush and only contact the cabinet at the seals
- Tighten the screws one by one while constantly checking the alignment

Additionally, in some cases, door dampers can be retrofitted to greatly reduce impact noise. Some users have also found that replacing the original hinges with higher-quality models is effective, as the IKEA hinge quality can sometimes deteriorate over time.

Finally, it is recommended never to force the doors closed to avoid damage and deformation.

If you like, I can also prepare a short checklist for readjusting and maintenance – this would certainly help with precise implementation.
