ᐅ How can the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe be better stabilized to prevent wobbling?

UssetarHello everyone,
I recently assembled an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe in my bedroom and noticed that, despite correct assembly, it feels quite wobbly. This is particularly frustrating because I don’t just use the wardrobe for storage; I also access the shelves and doors quite often – so it needs to feel secure. My question is: how can I better stabilize the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe to prevent wobbling?
I have already tried attaching it to the wall with the included angle brackets, but that alone doesn’t seem sufficient to ensure stability. Are there any recommended additional measures, such as extra anchors, special fastening methods, or assembly improvements, that I should consider?
I would appreciate any advice, especially if anyone has had similar experiences or knows practical solutions that really work.

Hello Ussetar,
First of all: Instability issues with wardrobes from furniture stores are unfortunately quite common but often easily fixable.
For the Brimnes wardrobe, there are some common causes of wobbling. The most important step I recommend is the wall mounting you already mentioned – it’s worth taking extra care here:
- Check carefully if the supplied brackets are suitable for your wall type (e.g., drywall/plasterboard vs. solid wall)
- If you have a lightweight wall, use appropriate wall plugs. For drywall: toggle anchors or cavity anchors; for concrete/brick: heavy-duty expansion anchors
- Sometimes the IKEA brackets only use two screw holes; consider adding extra screws or stronger brackets
Additionally, you can reinforce the wardrobe internally:
- A cross brace made from metal profiles or a wooden batten at the top between the side panels greatly increases stability
- Use additional screws at the joints where the modules connect, if possible
If the floor surface is uneven, leveling under the feet can also help. Here are a few details:
- Use adjustable furniture feet to improve stability on uneven floors
- Check if the wardrobe doors fit tightly – loose doors can amplify the sensation of wobbling
Finally: If you cannot attach the wall mount at the usual spot, sometimes an extra vertical brace is added behind the wardrobe, fixed to both the floor and the wall.
Can you describe the wall material and the type of mounting in more detail? Then I can offer more targeted advice.

I would recommend:
- Screw the cabinet to the wall using appropriate wall plugs
- Check if the feet are level
- If possible, install a wooden batten between the side panels at the top for reinforcement
This is usually sufficient.

If you have a lightweight wall, you should use appropriate anchors. For drywall: toggle bolts or hollow wall anchors; for concrete/stone: anchors with strong expansion propertiesThis distinction is crucial because choosing the wrong anchor significantly affects stability and causes visible wobbling.
Additionally, I recommend following the IKEA assembly instructions carefully and fastening the supplied wall mounts correctly. If the wall mounts are designed for low loads, metal brackets available on the market with at least four screw points provide much better load distribution.

A cross brace made of metal profiles or a wooden strip at the top between the side panels greatly reinforces stabilityA top crossbar increases the torsional rigidity of the cabinet and prevents tipping movements. This noticeably stabilizes the furniture, especially when the cabinet is tall.
Finally, the floor should be leveled or the furniture should be supported with sturdy, adjustable feet to compensate for uneven flooring.
The combination of these measures ensures the best possible stabilization. Proper and suitable wall anchoring is the most important factor.
